RECHARGED AND READY FOR 2023
By Bernadette Brooks, LWVNC President
Happy New Year <<First Name>>,

Hopefully you have had time in the past few weeks to recharge your batteries, ready to go bravely into 2023. Our board and committees have a lot planned to start out the New Year; we invite members and nonmembers alike to join us in any of the events described below. Participating in these activities is a good way to get to know more about your community and your League of Women Voters of Napa County.

Best regards for the year ahead,
Bernadette Brooks, LWVNC President
UPCOMING EVENTS
HONORING MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
MLK Essay Contest Award Ceremony
Sunday, January 15th, 4:00 pm
Congregation Beth Shalom
1455 Elm Street, Napa

To acknowledge MLK’s legacy, every year secondary students in the public and private Napa school systems are given an opportunity to write an essay based on one of MLK’s famous quotes. Chaired by former Board of Supervisor Brad Wagonknect, the contest is sponsored by a consortium of representatives from the Napa County Office of Education, County Library, and Board of Supervisors; Napa Valley CanDo; and the League of Women Voters of Napa County. Committee members read the submitted essays and pick the best entries. At the ceremony, the winners will read their essays and receive their awards.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION
Realignment of the Pretrial Process
with Ronald H. Abernathy, Napa County Public Defender

Thursday, January 19th, 5:00–6:00 pm
Napa County Library
580 Coombs Street, Napa

Sponsored by LWVNC's Criminal Justice Committee

Free and open to the public. Come and join in the conversation! Reservations are requested but not required to attend. RSVP here.
Some topics will be:

~ What does research say about the benefits of early access to a public defender?

~ Does early access provide more opportunities for accused persons to understand their rights more fully?

~ Does systemwide earlier access to counsel lead to decreased jail populations, fairer pretrial outcomes, and increased trust in the criminal legal system and its process?

The Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation for adults and juveniles who are charged with criminal offenses and are otherwise unable to afford counsel. Ronald H. Abernathy has been Napa County’s public defender since May 2013.
