Epiphany Blessings, Dear Church!

This past Sunday, we celebrated Epiphany and got to do several exciting things in worship with it. Not only did we get to bless our house of worship this year, but we also continued our tradition of receiving a star word for the year. Thanks to Pastor Kyle Severson for beginning this tradition with us as he celebrated Epiphany with us last year as I was at home with baby Emmett.

This year I had you all pick up your Star Words as you received communion during worship. For those of you who were able to pick one up, I hope you’ve placed yours somewhere memorable and that it will become one of the avenues for you to experience God this year. And if you haven’t had the opportunity to do so yet, there are Star Word cards on the ping-pong table in the fellowship hall at church, or you may click the link below to receive a randomly generated Star Word.

Like I mentioned on Sunday, I wanted to invite you into the spiritual practice of receiving by not sorting through the words or even trading your word once you picked it up. And if you receive your word via the link below, resist the urge to refresh or click again and take that first word as yours.

But what are these words, and why do we practice receiving them? The use of star words, also called “star gifts,” is a prayer practice connected to Epiphany and the new year that has been growing in popularity in Protestant churches for nearly a decade now. The idea is that a list of intention or focus words are printed out for the community to receive. As I mentioned above, they can become a powerful way to reflect on how God has moved through, around, or in connection to that word.

As we practice this tradition, we’re guided by several theological ideas. The Magi followed a star, which ultimately led them to Jesus. Therefore, we, too, use all the resources available to us—including creative prayer practices and intention words for the new year— to move closer to Jesus.

We know that the most common prayer practice for many involves speaking to God as opposed to silence or contemplation. We believe that star words invite a new prayer rhythm of reflection and review that can be a powerful new way to connect with God.

I look forward to connecting with you all as we journey together with our words. I wish to send you all today with this prayer. Today we have drawn star words. For some, these words are full of meaning, challenge, and invitation already. For others, these words are a blank canvas—inviting you into our lives.

So as a new year dawns, we pray that just as you have spoken to the generations before us, you would speak to us again. Allow us to use these star words as a tool that might help us hear you more clearly. May they guide us, as the star guided the Magi. And in a year, may we find ourselves here, together again, with mouths full of praise for the ways in which you have been present with us. Together we pray, with the saints before us.

Peace & Blessings, Dear Church,

Pastor Dave

The 2023 Church Council is Seeking New Blood!

The LCM constitution states that the church council
“shall consist of the pastor, deacon, officers (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer) and 10 members…, at least one of whom shall be a youth and at least one of whom shall be a young adult."
Our council has been operating short-staffed and needs your help.

The term of service is 2 years or 2-3 years… and you may not serve more than two terms consecutively.

The duties of council members will surprise you! They include:
“seeking to involve all members of the congregation in worship, learning, witness, service and support; to promote a climate of peace and goodwill....to endeavor to foster mutual understanding.”

It’s not all business!! A list of the duties will be posted on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Meetings are once a month for an hour or two.

We need at least two or three volunteers. Specifically we would like:

Secretary (member of the executive council;  3-year term) - takes minutes, solicits committee reports for the annual meeting and files those annual minutes with the Metro Chicago Synod.

At-large member (non-executive; 2-year term)

Youth member (non-executive; 2-year term)

We are also looking for committee chairpersons.
The constitution lists the following committees:

Christian Education
Worship and Music
Evangelism
Social Ministry
Stewardship
Finance
Fellowship
Youth
Preschool
Property

See something of interest? Would you like to know more?  Please contact a member of the nominating committee for more details.

"The Global Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity"

Service

Sunday, January 22nd
6:00 PM

Lutheran Church of the Master
580 N. Kuhn Road
Carol Stream, IL 60188
All are invited and all our various churches
- Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox -
will be represented once again.

We will have a combined choir and wonderful music.

A social fellowship, with food, is planned for the time after the service so we can meet one another.

Our service will follow the order set forward by the global church.

Our biblical text for this year is Isaiah 1:17, “Do good; seek justice.”

The hymns and prayers will be woven into this theme verse.

We will include
prayers of intercession, confession and renewed hope for our future together in Christ.

We will also feature several
personal stories of how God is at work in our community to unify brothers and sisters in our one
Lord Jesus Christ.
These are powerful stories and we invite you to come and hear!
