OPD Job Search Breakfast & Learn Series 🟡

The OPD is hosting a breakfast and learn series on the topic of job searching in Spring 2023. During each of the 6 sessions, I will give a short (~15 - 20 min) presentation on one part of the job search process, and the remainder of the hour can be spent asking questions, learning from (or commiserating with) your fellow graduate students and postdocs, and connecting with other people who are also thinking about job searching. Coffee and breakfast snacks will be provided for those who RSVP by 5PM on the Monday before each session (2 days before each session). 

You may attend one or more of the sessions - attendance at all of the sessions is not required, and you do not need to be actively looking for a job to participate!

The UMN Postdoctoral Association (PDA) in collaboration with Ashley Mahoney (MIN-Corps) is hosting a Networking-Soft Skills career development event. Join for a discussion and networking around building important soft skills needed to be successful on the job market. Soft skills are non-technical skills that describe how you work and interact with others. These reflect your communication style, work ethic, and work style. Discussion will revolve around various strategies you can use to develop and strengthen these skills. The event will be structured as 45 minutes of discussion, followed by 45 minutes of networking. Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program Recruitment and Information Fair, hosted by ORISE 🟡

Join the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) to learn more about available opportunities with the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program! The Intelligence Community (IC) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program (IC Postdoc Program) was established in 2000 to support unclassified basic research in areas of interest to the IC. Funded primarily by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the program annually supports several postdoctoral fellows from U.S. accredited colleges, universities, and U.S. Government laboratories across the country. In collaboration with research advisors, postdocs develop and submit technical research proposals that align with research opportunities proposed by the IC. The research is conducted by the postdocs while working in partnership with the research advisor, and collaborating with an advisor from the Intelligence Community.

Or you don't know too much about ADvantage yet, but you're interested in testing out the consultant job before committing to a full-time career in consulting? Then please join Bain & Co for this informative, interactive session for a deep dive into Bain's ADvantage internship program which allows AD candidates the opportunity to step into the role of a consultant and potentially walk away from the experience with a full-time offer to return. This webinar will provide an overview of the ADvantage program (history, growth story and what to expect) and talk in detail about the application and interview process for ADvantage. The webinar will also discuss who is eligible for ADvantage and who makes a strong applicant for this program. Lastly, you'll have the chance to hear from current Bainies who were former ADvantage interns and participated in the program (either in-person or virtually) and are now enjoying a successful career at Bain. They'll share their candid perspectives of how it felt stepping into the role of an intern on a case team for a week, and their advice for prospective applications.

Applications Open: The Art of Science Communication course from ASBMB ⚪️
The Art of Science Communication is an online course that provides fundamental training in science communication, focusing on how to present science to a nonexpert audience in a formal setting, such as a public lecture. Using video lectures, background material, virtual mentoring and discussions, the course covers the important components of what makes for a successful presentation, including messaging, generating interest and engaging with the audience. The course is open to all scientists and STEM professionals. The winter 2023 session will run from the week of Feb. 6 through the week of March 27. The course costs $25 for ASBMB members, and $100 for non-members. Apply here. Space is limited.

Applications Open: Excellence in Career Enrichment Leadership Scholar Award from Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center (MECC) 🟡
The inaugural ExCEL Scholar Award competition will invite up to four exceptional postdoctoral investigators to visit Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the MECC on March 14, 2023 to share their work in a half-day research symposium. Scholars will have the opportunity to network with faculty and trainees to learn more about research at Einstein. The selection committee seeks candidates with outstanding research achievements who have research interests that align with the four core MECC Cancer Programs: Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis; Stem Cell and Cancer Biology; Cancer Therapeutics; and Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention & Control. Women and candidates from historically underrepresented groups are specifically encouraged to apply. Read more via the program flyer and apply by January 24, 2023.

Registration Open: UMN Preparing Future Faculty Program 🔵
Registration is now open for GRAD 8101: Teaching in Higher Education and GRAD 8200: Practicum for Future Faculty and GRAD 8200: Designing and Delivering Online Learning. The Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program assists graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in developing teaching skills and exploring the faculty role at the college or university level. 

Registration Open: UMN International Teaching Assistant Program 🔵
Registration is now open for GRAD 5102: Preparation for University Teaching for Nonnative Speakers of English and GRAD 5105: Practicum in University Teaching for Nonnative Speakers of English. The International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Program courses, which are open to all nonnative English-speaking students and postdocs, focus on the discipline-specific oral communication skills needed to teach.

Applications Open: Yale Ciencia Academy for Professional Development 🟡🔵⚪️
The Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) is a FREE year-long program that equips biomedical or health sciences doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds who are ~2 years away from graduation with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to find great post-PhD positions. Over the course of one year, fellows will participate in in-person and virtual activities to become part of a supportive peer community; develop important career planning, mentoring, and scientific and interpersonal communication skills and products; and connect with role models from diverse backgrounds. Apply by March 1, 2023.

UCLA IRACDA Postdoctoral Fellowship
IRACDA is a four-year program with fellowships that provide up to 3 years of postdoctoral salary support and adds training and experience in college-level instruction to the typical mentored research training. The IRACDA program is funded through an NIH IRACDA grant awarded to UCLA. Participating postdocs will continue to dedicate most of their time to research, but additionally receive advanced pedagogical training at UCLA and engage in a formal teaching practicum in college level instruction at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), a four-year institution with a long-standing commitment to teaching students from underrepresented groups. The purpose of the IRACDA program is to train a diverse group of postdocs, preparing them for teaching and research careers in the biological sciences. The program involves training in effective research, mentoring, and teaching as well as support for career development in academia. Apply by April 1st to be considered for this application cycle.

Applications Open: LSSURP Seminar Coordinators
The Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program (LSSURP) is looking for 10 - 13 graduate students in the life sciences to be seminar coordinators to our undergraduate research students. These seminar coordinators will meet with a small group of students on a weekly basis in order to help the students develop their research poster and presentation skills. This position offers a temporary 12.5% TA appointment (5 hours/week at $20.74/hour). The program runs from June 3, 2023 to August 12, 2023.
