I hope you are all adjusting to the return to campus after the long break. I am very glad to be back on campus together with my team and our students!
I am sending this extra update to share news of some changes on our team. First, Marina Jacobo (6th Grade Math) reached out to me to say that due to her ongoing health issues, she will be leaving Cooper. Unfortunately, she has not been able to be here this week but has been working with us to close out her grade book and other aspects of her teaching responsibilities.
We are grateful for Ms. Jacobo’s work at Latin and wish her the very best. While I am sorry to announce this departure, there is good news: we have several options for filling this position and hope to be able to share an announcement with you soon. In addition, we have excellent support for the new teacher; Director of Numeracy Lisa Moore and Dean for Academic Operations Sam Spiegel are both veteran math teachers and will provide support and coaching for our math teacher. I am grateful to have such seasoned math teachers who can work to ensure our students keep learning math through this transition.
In addition, a member of the Student Support Department, Dominique Joseph-Brown, will also leave Cooper this week to pursue another opportunity. As you know, my background is in Special Education and I am therefore working closely with the Student Support Team to ensure we continue to provide support to our students with IEPs. I encourage you to reach out to your child's case manager or advisor with any concerns, as you would normally do. And of course, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with your questions.
We are telling our students about Ms. Jacobo and Ms. Joseph-Brown's departures this morning.
Finally, we have added two terrific team members in recent weeks - Terrence Bullock, Security Officer and Alberto Rios, Physical Education teacher. Both have already shown themselves to be wonderful additions to our Cooper family, and I am happy to be able to introduce them to you here. Please read more below!
I hope to see you all tomorrow at the social. A few more details on that party follow - do join us!
Sincerely,
Khashiffa Roberts
Principal
Alberto Rios
Physical Education/ Health Teacher
Mr. Rios joined the Cooper team just a few days before the winter break and jumped right in! He brings decades of experience in teaching, school administration, and coaching the Beautiful Game (soccer!) in his native DC and in Florida. Welcome to Cooper, Mr. Rios!
Terrance Bullock
Security Officer
Mr. Bullock is our campus security officer who joined us November, bringing both security expertise and school experience, including providing security for E.L. Haynes PCS. This combination means that he is the friendly face at our parking lot door who knows students by name while also ensuring our school is safe and secure. Welcome, Mr. Bullock!
