Latino Research Center 2022 Recap

This last year demonstrated to be a year of many opportunities, new beginnings, as well as challenges for many of us with that comes new goals and accomplishments. The successes of the Latino Research Center's programing would not have been accomplished without the help of all our faculty, staff, students, campus partners, and community partners. United, we accomplished initiatives that directly contribute to the mission of the Latino Research Center. We encourage you to review our highlights from 2022 that we plan to progress in the New Year of 2023!

The Latino Research Center continued to meet with their advisory boards throughout 2022 to help with idea contributions and steps to accomplish its overall mission. We thank our advisory board members for their ongoing contributions.

Director's Message

Exciting work has continued to take place at our Latino Research Center (LRC)! We saw 2022 fly by, and we are thrilled to engage in new opportunities for 2023 and beyond. Over the last year, there were numerous grants awarded to aid the endeavors of the LRC. Some of these grants supported our efforts to carry out successful events, such as El Grito (Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts), Dia de los Muertos 2022 (City of Reno Arts & Culture), as well as more unique events, such as the Latinx/e/a/o welcoming, Tu Bienvenida. Other grants are centered on research outcomes – the primary focus of our work. For example, the Inter-University Program for Latino Research seed grant, which will explore Latinx Faculty Departures at institutions across the country is a strong, multi-institution effort. Among our research grants, we are also awaiting feedback on a submission to the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. We have partnered with Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada College, and our University of Nevada, Reno’s CABNR for the LRC to serve as a Co-PI for the project entitled, NV Land-Ag (Latino and American Indian Next Generate Diversity in Agriculture); if awarded, this will bring approximately $10 million to our state and our research partners. The Latino Research Center has strengthened or developed partnerships within and outside of the university with numerous. We also look forward to soon filling the vacancy for the LRC Coordinator, while moving the needle on additional research projects and collaborations. The Latino Research Center is the only entity of its kind in the entire state with this particular demographic focus, and it is critical for the LRC’s work to reflect a statewide reach so that our findings, discoveries, and innovations can lead to social and cultural impacts across our communities and beyond. Thank you for your support – #VamosPack!
