St. Mark's E-News

January 6, 2023
The feast of Epiphany (“manifestation”) concludes the Christmas season with a celebration of God’s glory revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. In Isaiah and Ephesians, that glory is proclaimed for all nations and people. Like the light of the star that guided the magi to Jesus, the light of Christ reveals who we are: children of God who are claimed and washed in the waters of baptism. We are sent out to be beacons of the light of Christ, sharing the good news of God’s love to all people. (from Sunday and Seasons).

COVID / RSV/ FLU UPDATE

At its November meeting, the Congregational Council decided it would be prudent for St. Mark's to align with the advice of the medical community by strongly recommending the wearing of masks while inside the building.. To be clear, mask wearing is still optional, not mandated. A box of masks can be found on the information table in the Parish Hall for those who arrive without and wish to wear one.

New Year Message from LWF
In her New Year message, Lutheran World Federation General Secretary Rev. Anne Burghardt urges Christians "not to be indifferent but to speak and act wherever we see how human brokenness is sowing seeds of hatred, disunity, oppression and disrespect for God's creation." The LWF leader notes that the global communion of churches is preparing to hold its Assembly in Krakow, Poland, in September on the theme of 'One Body, One Spirit, One Hope'. It is a theme inspired by Paul's letter to the Ephesians, most probably quoting from a baptismal liturgy celebrated by early Christian communities, she says. To read Rev. Burghardt full address, please click here.
"Let's Talk: Again" begins Wednesday
Session 1 happens this Wednesday, January 11 at 1 PM in the Parish Hall.

You are invited to join in the conversation as we resume the study of the New Testament. If you are interested in history and the theology taught to us through the New Testament, this is for you!

The New Testament is a fascinating book, in fact 27 different books, which offer an exciting opportunity to investigate and discuss Christian practices, conflicts of belief, the institution of the Church and of course Jesus of Nazareth.

This Wednesday: Interpreting Abraham in Hebrews and James

You might think of Abraham as belonging to the Old Testament, but he plays a mighty role in the writings of the New Testament. In the Book of Hebrews, Abraham appears as a model of faith, whereas, in James he is an object of controversy over how people are saved – by faith alone or by faith and works.

Get a head start by reading the book of Hebrews and the book of James.

(A written synopsis of the Professor David Brakke video we will be viewing will be available from the information table in the Parish Hall.)
Eternity for Today

The latest edition of the Eternity Today devotional booklets (January- March 2023) have arrived.

A limited number of copies are available for pick up from the information table in the Parish Hall.

Eternity for Today has been a long standing publication of the Program Committee for Worship (PCW) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.

This daily devotional follows the lectionary of the church and provides daily reflections and prayers from ELCIC members across the church.

Support our Urban Meals program
During the COVID pandemic, Lutheran Urban Ministry (LUM) transitioned from offering sit down meals to distributing bag lunches.  St. Mark's has a long history of participating in this program.  Once a month, volunteers gather at the church to prepare and pack bag lunches.

Aside from all important volunteers, the Urban Meals program depends on extra-mile giving by St. Mark's members.  Donations are used to buy the ingredients that go into the bag lunches.

You can make a financial contribution towards the Urban Meals program through your regular offering envelope or via e-transfer to office@stmarkslutheran.ca.  Please remember to add a notation on your envelope or in the message box of the e-transfer that the donation is for Urban Meals.

For more information, about the Urban Meals program, contact Ed Mann.

Need a copy of the church directory?
Over the past few weeks, several members have received emails from someone posing as Pastor Zsofi. We are unsure as to how member email addresses have fallen into the hands of scammers.  As a precaution, we have removed both the telephone/email directory and pictorial directory from the church website.

If you would like a copy of either of these directories, please contact the church office and an electronic version will be forwarded to you.
You can find out what's happening at St. Mark's in the coming weeks by viewing our online calendar.

To have something added to the calendar, contact Lori in the church office.
