Actions for Week of January 23

MONDAY, JAN. 23
(1) TWO IN-PERSON ACTIONS - NYC

• 9 AM, CITY HALL STEPS: Rally to disband the NYPD's violent Strategic Response Group and call for the canceled city council hearing on it to be rescheduled. VIRTUAL ALTERNATIVE: Call your NYC council member and demand the hearing that was planned for today be rescheduled ASAP. It was canceled because the NYPD refused to cooperate, and that's unacceptable.
• 5:30 PM, UNION SQUARE: Join Gays Against Guns in a march to Chinatown to memorialize the 10 people shot to death in Monterey Park, Calif., during Lunar New Year celebrations. VIRTUAL ALTERNATIVE: Can't make it to the march? No matter where you live, you can join Moms Demand to fight gun violence. Text the word ACT to 644-33 to get started.

• Red2Blue works to flip seats by helping progressive Democratic candidates up and down the ballot (keep in mind how important state and local races have become in the fight for reproductive justice now that Roe has been overturned). Join this call for a debrief of accomplishments in 2022 and a look ahead.
• For a New York State-specific election debrief, join this call with activists who are planning to win back the lost New York seats in the House, as well as hold New York for Democrats in the 2024 presidential election.

TUESDAY, JAN. 24
(1) FOX LIES PROTESTS IN TWO CITIES - NYC AND BETHESDA, MD.

• NYC: 12 PM - 1 PM, 48TH & 6TH. Join Truth Tuesdays and Rise and Resist for this week's theme:  "Fox lies worse than George Santos." RSVP on Facebook.
• BETHESDA: 4 PM - 5 PM, corner of Elm St. and Wisconsin. Join Defenders of Democracy Against Disinformation to hold some spiffy new signs!

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25
REPLACE JAY JACOBS MEETING - NEW YORK STATE

WHEN: 7 PM ET
Jay Jacobs is the Chair of the New York State Democratic Committee and we are holding him responsible for the New York State congressional losses that flipped the House of Representatives to a Republican majority. He needs to be replaced.

THURSDAY, JAN. 26
(1) GET RIKERS CLOSED RALLY - QUEENS, NY
WHERE: QUEENS THEATER, 14 UNITED NATIONS AVE SOUTH
WHEN: 11 AM ET RALLY (MEET-UP IS EARLIER)
You can catch a 9:30 AM bus from the Bronx or Brooklyn to get to this rally ahead of NYC mayor Eric Adams' State of the City address. When Adams was running for office, he supported the closure of the death-trap Rikers Island jail complex. Now he's trying to backpedal even though 19 people died in Rikers last year. (Most people in Rikers haven't been convicted of anything; they're just there because they can't afford bail for nonviolent crimes.)

(2) FIGHT MAGA WITH INDIVISIBLE - NATIONAL

Indivisible is a national grassroots network that emerged in 2017 after former congressional aides released a very practical "Indivisible Guide" to defeating Trump. (This newsletter is coming to you from an Indivisible chapter!)  Well, we got Trump out of office but the MAGA fascism he unleashed is obviously still plaguing us. Join this call for the formal launch of Indivisible: A Practical Guide to Defeating MAGA, whether you live in a community that’s red, blue, or something in between.

• NEED INSPIRATION? I always say the best thing to write about is whatever is pissing you off the most today. But if you need more guidance than that, here are two ideas.
  •  If you're represented by a Republican in Congress, tell that person that you're pissed off that compulsive liar George Santos is not only still in the House of Representatives but getting committee assignments. Tell your rep that guy's got to go. 
  • Got Democratic electeds? Push for abortion rights at the state level, which is where the fight is right now. (Text STATE to 50409 to find those folks.) At the federal level, the ask is gun control, in the wake of the murders of 10 people in Monterey Park, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 21.
