Hello ESIP! Where were you 25 years ago?
Think about it. Google’s search engine just launched, the movie Titanic topped the box office, and the Endeavor space shuttle crew connected the first two modules of the International Space station.
Seems like a long time ago. 1998 was a milestone year in many ways, and especially for us with ESIP’s founding 25 years ago. With new tech and organizations emerging all the time, ESIP’s consistent staying power and longevity shows a depth of need and impact that can’t be taken for granted.
We explore this impact in our 2022 Annual Report (catch a sneak peek of our "ESIP in Action" stories), and this year we will celebrate the success of the ESIP community and embrace 2023 as the Year of Open Science. I am excited to gather with all of you in just a few weeks at our virtual January Meeting where we will focus on “Opening Doors to Open Science.”

Expanding Access to ESIP Scholarship
We care about diversity in the ESIP community. As part of our work to make Earth science data and our community more fair, accessible, and open, we offer complimentary meeting registration for up to 15 students who identify as Black, Latinx, and/or Indigenous. Graduate students, recent graduates (within three years of graduation), and students in their final year of an undergraduate degree in a related field are eligible to apply. Please share!

Funding: High Priority Open-Source Science (HPOSS) (Jan 19)
NASA's Transformation to Open Science (TOPS) program is hosting an informational webinar on Jan 19 at 1 p.m. EST about the High Priority Open-Source Science (HPOSS) program. HPOSS provides funding for new work on technology that would support open-source science, which could include developing new data formats, software, frameworks, or libraries.
Funding: Geosciences Open Science Ecosystem (GEO OSE) (Jan 20)
The GEO OSE program seeks to support sustainable and networked open science activities to foster an ecosystem of inclusive access to data, physical collections, software, advanced computing, and other resources toward advancing research and education in the geosciences. Proposals are due in March and there is an informational webinar on Friday, January 20 at 1 p.m. EST.
Workshop: Scalable and Computationally Reproducible Approaches to Arctic Research (March 27-31)
This is a five-day, in-person workshop at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, California. The workshop will provide Arctic researchers with an introduction to advanced topics in computationally reproducible research in python, including software and techniques for working with very large datasets.
Workshop: coreR Course (April 3-7)
The NCEAS Learning Hub is also offering their next coreR course in April 2023. This is a five-day introductory course on collaborative, open, reproducible, and essential data science skills taught in R. There is a scholarship available for students, which is due Feb 13.

Survey for Cross-domain Interoperability (Jan 16)
The results of this survey will be synthesized and publicly reported in a roadmap to expand the cross-domain interoperability of WorldFAIR's ocean case study.
GSA: Geoinformatics Award (2023)
The Geological Society of America (GSA) Geoinformatics & Data Science Division is now accepting nominations for the M. Lee Allison Award. This award is granted annually by GSA for outstanding contributions to geosciences through the application of the principles of Geoinformatics. The award is open to any GSA member in good standing.
