Happy New Year, Dear Church!

I sure hope the new year has been off to a great start for you all! And even though it doesn’t feel like it, it’s still Christmas. By the time this is sent, it’ll be the last day of Christmas as we celebrate Epiphany. So, I want to share two things with you today. First, on New Year’s Day, as we celebrated the 2nd Sunday of Christmas, I had everyone take a little ornament with the name of Jesus to color during worship.

As a fidgeter myself, how can you not enjoy a little coloring? But the purpose wasn’t just to have something creative to do during worship. My sermon focused on the hope we find in the Christmas story, particularly Mary. And so I asked each of you to write something that gives you hope on the back of the ornament. I want to share some of what you wrote because they’re fantastic.

I haven’t listed them all, nor are these included here the best, but just what I grabbed from the tree. You find hope in your granddaughter’s smile, unconditional love, your spouse, and the resurrection. You find hope in having found this place and that you belong here, that you are able to bring hope to others.

You find hope in sunny skies and, just simply, tomorrow. You find hope in justice and in people as a whole. Thank you so much for the blessing of sharing your hopes. May they continue to bring your hope and spread God’s blessing to others.

Secondly, as we celebrate Epiphany in worship this Sunday, we’ll do an Epiphany tradition known as “Chalking the Door” with this blessing: 20+C+M+B+23. We mark this blessing upon our sanctuary doors on Epiphany for a couple of reasons. We recognize the Wisemen’s arrival on Epiphany, whose names were determined to be Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar.

The other reason is that it is a blessing for our entire year as we recognize God’s presence and blessing in our worship space and homes. The “CMB” also stands for the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat which means “May Christ bless this house.” For us, the house we refer to is our house of worship, but this tradition can be done in your own homes!

If you’d like, you may inscribe this blessing over the doors of your home: 20+C+M+B+23. And as you inscribe this on your door, you may say the following prayer. God of Light, bless our home, make it a haven of love and safety full of all your warmth and care. And when we go out from this place, may we never lose sight of the light of God we all carry. We mark our door with the symbol of blessing: ‘Christus Mansionem Benedicat.’

Thank you again for all that you share, dear church. May your hopes and this Epiphany season continue to be a blessing to you all.
Peace & Blessings, Dear Church,

Pastor Dave

The fear of Friday the 13th is called:

FRIGGATRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA
(from Frigg, the Norse goddess of wisdom after whom Friday is named, the Greek words triskaideka, meaning 13, and phobia, meaning fear)

Very little is known about the origins of the day's notoriety.  However, one belief is that it has Biblical origins as Jesus was crucified on a Friday and there were 13 guests at the Last Supper the night before.

Hope you enjoyed this little  bit of trivia!
Happy Friday the 13th!
