New CAME Staff Members

Ravyn Gale - SPARC352 Communication Assistant
We are pleased to welcome Ravyn Gale to our communications team. Ravyn was born and raised in Crystal River, Florida. Her parents encouraged and fostered her creativity from a young age. Coming from a long line of artists that sacrificed their creativity to get a steady job, Ravyn falsely believed that she wouldn’t be able to get a career in art, and so she attended the University of Minnesota Duluth for a B.A. in Computer Science and a minor in Arts in Media. After graduation and having little interest in STEM, she started a business in art at the local markets. Ravyn loves using her art to make people laugh and smile. "I am excited to be a part of the SPARC team as I want to make art more accessible, feasible, and to make a difference using art". -Ravyn

In December, the University of Florida School of Theater and Dance (SoTD) presented 28th Anniversary Performance of Agbedidi. Agbedidi 2022 featured choreographic works by Associate Professor Trent Williams Jr., Assistant Professor of West African Dance Rujeko Dumbutshena, and Adjunct Faculty Christa Sylla. SoTD master musicians, Aboubacar Camara, Aboubacar “Amo” Soumah, and Kenneth Metzker (funded by CAS) also graced the stage.

Support from CAME made it possible for guest master musicians Lansana (Tasana) Camara and Dr Djo Bi Irie to perform in Agbedidi as well. From the School of Music, the African Popular Music Ensemble, directed by Assistant Professor Sarah Politz, also performed in this year’s production.  With a CAME Project Fund award in 2022, Politz and Dumbutshena premiered a piece arranged by multi-instrumentalist Zivanai Masango; performed by guest artists Barakissa Couibaly and Alana Jackson; and accompanied by the African Popular Music Ensemble.

Neo-endogenous revitalisation: Enhancing community resilience through art tourism and rural entrepreneurship

To promote community resilience, art- and creativity-based strategies are emerging as important means for rural revitalisation. This study, published in the Journal of Rural Studies, adopts a neo-endogenous perspective to examine how socially engaged art can represent an effective tool for revitalising communities and strengthening their resilience. The article discusses the case of Japan’s Setouchi Triennale, an international art festival which aims at revitalising twelve small islands by promoting socially engaged art and festival tourism. The link below provides more information about elements that are necessary for increased rural resilience through art.
