Maidan Museum, a Site of Conscience in Kyiv, is the only national museum in Ukraine devoted to collecting, exhibiting, interpreting, and disseminating the stories of the struggles by Ukrainians for national independence, human rights, individual freedoms, and dignity. The Museum draws upon the events of the recent past, including the Ukrainian Revolution in February 2014 (pictured above), and continues its work despite Russia's 2022 invasion.

Mobilizing Memory:

Defending Cultural Memory During Conflicts

January 19, 2023 (10:00am EST-NY)

“They have their own idea that Ukraine does not exist as a culture. That’s why they want to destroy everything: to show that here there is nothing. This is, very clearly, a colonial way of thinking. This is how empires always work.”
- Kateryna Iakovlenko, a Ukrainian art historian, quoted in the New York Times

In December 2022, UNESCO verified the destruction of 227 Ukrainian cultural sites - including museums, religious sites, historic buildings, libraries, and monuments - since the Russian invasion began. In the same month, the Taliban, which took over Afghanistan in August 2021, banned all women and girls from attending school beyond the 6th grade – effectively erasing them from the educational and cultural landscape.

Around the world, activists and practitioners at Sites of Conscience are on the front lines, countering these repressive efforts and defending the right to memory, truth, and justice even in the most challenging settings.

On January 19th at 10am (EST), join us as we talk with two of them: Ihor Poshyvailo from Maidan Museum, a Site of Conscience in Kyiv, and Hadi Marifat, founder of the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization, a member site formerly based in Kabul. In conversation with ICSC's Linda Norris, these cultural heroes will share insights into the ways national memory affects conflict, how cultural practitioners do their work during conflict, and how the outside world can support them.

The webinar is on Thursday, January 19th at 10:00 am (EST-NY). It is free and open to the public. To register, click here.

Resources from our Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation (GIJTR)

Founded in 2014, ICSC's GIJTR has worked with partners in 72 countries, fostered over 323 grassroots projects, and engaged more than 681 local civil society organizations in supporting community-wide participation in transitional justice processes.

GIJTR regularly produces publications to share lessons learned from its work around the world. These tailored toolkits and policy briefs provide practitioners, academics, and activists with concrete strategies and tools to help survivors of recent conflict recover from their trauma and help their communities break through cycles of violence. These resources are free and accessible to all here.
