Happy New Year!

I wanted to start off 2023 with a HUGE Thank you to all of you for being such great supporters of CARL! Our rescue would not still be here without the tremendous support from all of you!

The past 3 years has seen a huge upheaval in everyone's lives while we figure out a new normal in the aftermath of the COVID 19 Pandemic. 2022 was a year that we were all hoping to finally be back up and running. Unfortunately, just when we were hoping to get back to events, COVID came back with another variant, and we were back to social distancing. Our big fundraiser, Pooch Parade, could not be planned if we didn't know if people could come and participate. We have a tentative date for 2023 but need to see if its available, so more to come!

The most important thing we need to do now, is to get back to our regular adoption events. To do that, we need volunteers. The east side of the county has been able to start back up and now we need to get events up and running at the PetSmart locations in Camarillo, Ventura, and Oxnard. To do that we need volunteers that can set up and run an event at a location. It may seem daunting, but once you do a few, you will figure out what works for you. I would like to start back up at my favorite spot, PetSmart in Ventura. Please reach out to me if you are interested in helping me or if you want to get some experience before leading your own event.

Volunteers are the heart of our rescue. We need you now, more than ever. Dogs are being given up at record rates now that people are going back to their offices after working from home. We need volunteers that can help with Social media, Videos, Website, Fundraising, Record keeping, Facilities, Dog walking and so much more. Anyone can help in some way and the reward will be seeing a homeless dog become a loved family member.

The CARL pups look forward to seeing you, our wonderful volunteers and supporters at an adoption event, fundraiser, or the kennel sometime in 2023.

Sincerely,
Grace Cunningham
President,
CARL Board of Directors

2023 Has Arrived!

We have several positive things happening this year as well as some challenges.

Pooch Parade
We plan on the Pooch Parade on May 7 at the Ventura Harbor.  A little hold up is that they haven't confirmed our location, I expect that will be resolved ASAP. Pooch Parade gives many opportunities for volunteer involvement. The day itself is a glorious party with dog lovers from all over, spending their day watching demonstrations, entering fun dog contests, picking out winners at the silent auction, tons of vendors, and of course the day starts with the Pooch Parade itself, dogs strutting their stuff along the beach, past the gawking tourists and back to the park. Until you have been through it you don't believe the power of all those people loving their dogs.

To pull it off we need volunteers for the Pooch Parade committee, to organize and lead other volunteer in finding and creating all the parts to make this our biggest fundraiser of the year!

Dogs Medical Records
We have a couple of volunteers who will be keeping us on track with medical services and making sure our foster dogs get timely vaccinations. Thank you to those volunteers!

We have a volunteer willing to give Network for good a try. Talisa set a high bar; she has accepted the challenge!! See her article in this newsletter!

Network for Good
Hi, my name is Elizabeth E. and I was asked mid-December to assist with the Network For Good, a fundraising software to grow relationships with supporters. I’m still understanding the web site and all its benefits for C.A.R.L., so in the meantime I’m interviewing volunteers and staff to hopefully gain some exposure and insight into the dogs and shelter to allow donors and sponsors to connect better. I’m also trying to include photos and videos with those interviews. It is a work in progress for me so please bear with me as I try and maneuver what works and doesn’t. If you see me walking around with my note pad and pen, please don’t be scared, as I only want to learn more about you or the dogs.

NFG
Chula, a grey and white female American Staffordshire Terrier has lived at Canine and Adoption Rescue League in Santa Paula, Ca. for the last two years, thanks to her generous sponsors Marilyn U and Catherine S. Seven year old Chula, was headed to be euthanized from the previous shelter she was at before C.A.R.L. rescued her. Sponsoring a dog is a financial commitment to pay for the boarding and medical expenses of the dog. Sponsors and donors provide the support to keep C.A.R.L. dogs prospering and cared for until a loving human adopts them. Sponsors are always needed and as a sponsor you will receive updates and photos of your dog monthly.

C.A.R.L. a 501(c)(3) non-profit all breed, no-kill dog rescue and adoption organization was founded in 1996. C.A.R.L. relies on donations and does not receive government, state, or city funding. It operates almost entirely by volunteers.

Pet Care Center Improvements
Marsha M has been working to enhance the grounds and facilities for years, finally, someone else with her passion joins her. Our Pet Care Center is undergoing a major facelift thanks to Michael the Beautifier. He has committed to making us as good as we can be, so far gravel landscape instead of mud, a beautiful stainless steel dog washing tub,  redesign of office planter area so water runs off instead of requiring customers and their family to wade to the counter, resolving flooding in parking lot in a legal efficient way. He has an eye for order and is fighting years of "stick it over there for now".  He also introduced the goody bags customers receive when they leave, a concrete way to show our appreciation with a request to share our brochure with a friend.  The more dogs we board, the more dogs we can save.

We  had great assistance from the Sea Bees, spreading gravel and other clean up and the Boy Scouts will be out in a week or two to pull wet muddy artificial turf from the dog's play yards and replace with fresh new clean turf. Our turf has all been donated by local turf companies. Local support for our dogs and their environment is greatly appreciated!!

Rescues
We have been talking with a rescue about them booking a set number of runs whether occupied or not to allow them to respond to urgent needs in the Bakersfield desert areas. It gives us a reliable source of income monthly and gives them the ability to respond quickly.  Some other rescues are interested, having heard of the discussions. We always face concern that LA rescues will not be able to provide services to their dogs, we are very cautious that dogs do not become warehoused with us. These discussions will be continuing in the next month or two.

More Volunteers Please
One challenge that has become clear is our great need for more volunteers at the kennel.  We have a strong crew of walkers But, if we increase rescue boarders, we risk overwhelming our volunteers. We need volunteers who will sit with an older dog and tell stories, bathers for dogs in our beautiful new tub, volunteers who will accompany a dog to the large arena where ball chasing may be top activity, maybe a splash in kiddie pool, maybe sniffing everywhere, even lounging in the grass. Volunteers don't have to be Olympic athletes; they need to love dogs and give a bit of time so a dog can love back.

CARL Boarding Contract
CARL needed an updated boarding contract to reflect current insurance requirements.
Getting this resolved took us a long time. Thankfully our volunteer,  attorney Jean F, put us in the hands of an expert in the field. The contract went from a mere 1 page to 4., we send it ahead of time so they can make sense of it.  The rescues will be adjusting in 2023 to the changes. We all wish for the simple days of helping each other help the dogs. We all will adjust because regardless of the paperwork,  IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DOGS!

Finding A New Kennel Supervisor!
And our challenge is finding a new kennel supervisor.  Sandy B will be joining her husband Cody, in another state where he will take up solar installation and construction.  He has been the go-to guy at the kennel because of his construction experience so it is a double loss.  The Supervisor position is a tough one! Anyone who has worked in a 24-hour institution knows everything is always in flux. Sandy's commitment to the dogs and the staff really stands out. Please pass the word, we have begun advertising, we should have the position listed on indeed and our websites and other social media within the next week.

Happy New Year may many more dogs find happy loving lives with all our support!

Change A Pet’s Life Day:

8 Ways To Change A Dog’s Life On January 24th

On January 24th, we celebrate Change A Pet’s Life Day. This special day is for encouraging people to adopt pets from shelters and raise awareness about animals in need.

There are tons of ways to celebrate and change an animal’s life for the better. Even though we encourage adoption on this day, and many shelters have reduced adoption fees to celebrate, you don’t have to adopt a dog every year to make a positive impact.

Here are eight ways you can change a dog’s life for the better on Change A Pet’s Life Day.

1. Adopt Or Foster

Adopting a shelter dog is a huge way to make an impact on a dog's life. But even if you're not ready to commit to a lifetime of love just yet, you can get a trial run by fostering.

Fosters also help other dogs by freeing up some resources at shelters so new pups can get what they need and have a better chance of finding forever homes.

Lots of shelters have reduced rates for Change A Pet's Life Day, so it's a great day to look into adopting, too.

2. Sponsor A Dog

If you're unable to take home a dog of your own right now, many shelters, rescues, and sanctuaries will allow you to sponsor a specific dog of your choosing.

Depending on your sponsorship, you might get updates and pictures in the mail that let you know how your pup is doing, or you may be able to sponsor an adoption fee to encourage a loving forever family to take your dog home.

It's a great way to change a dog's life for the better if you can't adopt.

3. Volunteer Your Time

Shelters are always in need of people to help walk dogs and give them love and attention while they wait for forever homes.

Volunteering your time will help shelters provide care for all the dogs that they look after, and it helps dogs get some much needed socialization, which in turn helps the pups become more adoptable. Being a volunteer makes a big difference in the lives of dogs who are waiting to find their new families.

You can find out more about how to volunteer at an animal shelter here!

4. Donate

Shelters cost lots of money to operate, and most of them are nonprofits. They rely on donations from animal lovers so that they can take care of as many animals as possible.

By making a charitable contribution to a shelter, you're making sure that dogs get food, medical care, vaccinations, microchips, and everything they need to stay healthy and prepare for a life in a loving home.

You can also write off most donations to shelters and rescues on your taxes.

5. Spread The Word About Adoptable Dogs

Thanks to social media, getting the word out about adoptable dogs has never been easier. By simply sharing dogs in need on your Facebook wall, you're helping those pups get seen and shared by others.

We regularly share adoptable dogs on our DogTime Facebook page, as well as our Save A Dog page. We encourage you to simply click the "share" button to help spread the word.

It's very easy and makes a huge difference in the lives of dogs looking to get adopted.

6. Raise Awareness For Shelters

Check local shelters near you, and see if they are holding any events for Change A Pet's Life Day. Chances are good that you can get involved and, at the very least, help raise awareness for what the shelter needs to make dogs' lives better.

Spread the word to all your friends, and make upcoming shelter events a fun chance to get in touch with the people you care about for a good cause. The dogs will appreciate it, and you'll get even more people involved.

7. Tell Your Dog's Story

A simple way to help encourage others to adopt and make a difference in a dog's life is to share your own dog's story. Where did you meet your dog? Was it love at first sight? What were the challenges, and how has your pup changed your life for the better?

Showing the positive impact your dog has had on your life is a great way to show others that a dog might be right for them, too. You'll be helping to encourage adoption, and it's a great opportunity to talk all about your dog, which is something we dog lovers are always happy to do.

8. Make Some Positive Changes For Your Dog

Maybe you've already adopted a pup of your own, and that's a great first step in changing a dog's life for the better. But there are always more changes you can make and ways to improve your own bond with your dog.

Try learning some new tricks or getting into an exercise routine. See what you can do to connect with your dog on a deeper level, or just try making some homemade food or treats.

Changing a dog's life for the better will change your own life for the better, too.

What ways can you make a difference in a dog’s life? Are you doing anything special for Change A Pet’s Life Day?
