Proper Purpose

January 11, 2023

Listen Now

Have you ever used a shoe heel as a hammer? Or a bread knife as a screwdriver? Or your keys as a mini saw? I have. Sometimes it will work for a short time, but I must go back with the proper tool to get the job done right. Shoes are not made to be hammers, and bread knives are not screwdrivers. Keys can poke holes in plastic to tear it open, but you’ll probably cut yourself on ragged edges.

You have a purpose as well. A divine purpose. God created you for His glory and to complete the good works ordained for you. Popular culture tells us we were created out of randomness and that the only meaning in life is what we decide. Such ideas lead to thoughts of despair and futility. When the world tells you that there is nothing special about you and you are just a product of the universe’s randomness, read the psalmist’s words to remind you how the God of the universe sees you.

“God, (you)  shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.

I thank you, High God - you’re breathtaking!  Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out; you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you. The days of my life all prepared  before I’d even lived one day.”

You were created by God for God to be in fellowship with Him and to live with Him forever. Anything else, and you’re just a shoe pretending to be a hammer.

For His Glory,
