<<First Name>>,

We look at hard skills with regards to firearms as the foundational skill sets needed to get the gun into fight and then to do the work that needs to be done. Our goal is to have those skills over developed to the point where they simply happen cold and on demand at the subconsciously competent level of execution.

The reason that we strive to have our hard skills trained to that level is that we want to be able to use our conscious thinking brain available for thinking through the tactical problems that need to be solved. These problems include figuring out the threat, figuring out the terrain available with regards to cover, concealment and optimum positions for engagement, keeping track of friendly personnel, communication and everything else unrelated running the gun.

When it comes to hard skills for pistols the following should be at the top of the list:
  • Drawing the pistol with alacrity AND a solidly established grip
  • Indexing the pistol such that it is aligned with the target and the sights/optic are at the eye-target line
  • A proper grip that uses the support hand to crush the grip the pistol and the firing hand to rapidly manipulate the trigger straight to the rear
  • The ability to apply the correct aiming confirmation to the target based on confirmed capabilities for the target size and distance
  • The ability to choose reactive or predictive follow up shots on the target based on confirmed capabilities for the target size and distance
Long-gun centric hard skills are similiar and include:
  • Mounting the gun such that the support hand provides almost all of the support and allows the firing hand to focus on running the trigger.
  • Indexing the weapon so that the sights/optic are generally aligned to the target and require minimal additonal correction to make A-zone hits
  • The ability to apply the correct aiming confirmation to the target based on confirmed capabilities for the target size and distance
  • The ability to choose reactive or predictive follow up shots on the target based on confirmed capabilities for the target size and distance
For both pistols and long-guns the following hard skills should be developed:
  • The ability to start in or transition into a proper shooting stance
  • Transitioning rapidly between targets
  • Hold-over/knowing where to aim based the distance to the target
  • Reloading the weapon
  • Fixing malfunctions that might occur with the weapon
  • The ability to keep the gun recoiling in a vertical manner and then return to the starting position when shooting multiple rounds
All of the skills listed above with the exception of "The ability to keep the gun recoiling in a vertical manner and then return to the starting position when shooting multiple rounds" can and should be trained using dry-fire on a regular basis. This is the most efficient means of practicing these skills as neither a range nor ammo is required to train.

This then allows for focusing live-fire training sessions on validating dry-fire training and working on recoil control.

A 10 minute dry-fire session done three times a week will make a world of difference in developing your firearms related hard skills. We recommend the following resources for guiding your dry-fire training: DryFire Reloaded, Practical Shooting Training, and Adaptive Rifle.
