The Six Hymns Project

If you have ever listened to an excellent choir, you will have noticed that they sang in parts. Soprano, alto, tenor and bass each have their own notes to sing which creates a lovely harmony. For years and years, some of the best singing like this was found in local churches.

While everyone singing the melody line is lovely in its own right, there is something beautiful when human voices blend into one harmonious sound. To help us grow in our own confidence and skill in this, we are going to sing one hymn per month in our pre-service singing time, in order to learn how to sing it in parts.

Our plan is to have four singers to help you find your part. A soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Plus, we will print the sheet music in the bulletin for you to follow along. You do not even really have to be able to read music to do this. You just pick your line of notes and when they go up, you go up! When they move down, you guessed it, you move down.

Even if you cannot follow along with the written music, you should be able to follow along a vocal leader.

Like all choir practises, we assume this will be a little clunky at first and get better each week. Then we will develop our own little repertoire of songs we can sing in this way. What is really cool is that, if you learn how to sing a part in one hymn, you can start to sing the parts in other hymns. It just takes practise.

You may have noticed we do not have a weekly choir at Grace Fellowship Church. That is because we believe the congregation is the primary choir of the church. When we sing to one another we are fulfilling a Biblical command! So, let’s seek to do that with the same pursuit of excellence we seek to do all things as unto our Lord.

Below you will find some helpful resources for our first hymn: It is Well With My Soul.

Youtube: 4 Parts
- use the links in the description to hear each part separately
- pick a part where you can sing all the notes (not too high or too low)
- practice singing along to the video

Sheet Music: It is Well
- listen to the video while you follow the line of notes on the music.
