E&E News From pipeline permitting to agency rulemaking, federal courts are poised to decide a suite of legal challenges in 2023 that could set the pace of the nation’s transition away from fossil fuels. The rulings could also tee up a clash between Congress and the courts. Lawmakers have passed legislation that could clear the way for a massive lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico — if a federal appeals court does not intervene. 
Canary Media - The grid may be the weakest link in the chain connecting the U.S. to a clean energy future. Strengthening it to support the decarbonization of the country’s electricity system will take hundreds of billions of dollars of new investment, according to multiple studies. But money alone won’t be enough. It will also require a rapid evolution of the regulatory structures that determine how high-voltage transmission lines get built.
NPR - Heavy rainstorms barreled into California earlier this month, bringing high winds, heavy rain, snow and power outages as residents braced for possible flooding. It is the state's third hit from an atmospheric river since Dec. 26. "We anticipate that this may be one of the most challenging and impactful series of storms to touch down in California in the last five years," said Nancy Ward, the new director of the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
