| |  | | JANUARY 2023 NEWSLETTER | | News and Announcements | | Atlanta Global Studies Center Welcomes New Associate Director, Dr. Stuart Minson |  | The Atlanta Global Studies Center is excited to welcome its new Associate Director at Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Stuart Minson. Prior to his arrival to Georgia Tech, Stuart served for 7 years as the Associate Director of the University of Georgia’s program to Oxford, UK, gaining extensive knowledge and experience in the management and operation of academic programs in a global context. He comes with extensive experience living, working, and teaching abroad, bringing a clear vision of the role of Education for Sustainable Development in the context of global studies programs. Stuart has a broad range of advanced IT skills, including programming, database management, website design and network infrastructure. Dr. Minson received a BA in History and Classics from the University of Melbourne, a M Phil. in Modern European History from the University of Oxford, and a Ph.D. in History, also from the University of Oxford, with the successful defense of his dissertation “Political Culture and Urban Space in Early Tudor London.” His research has been presented in universities in the US and the UK and published in academic journals and books focusing on European history and literature. He has received numerous grants and awards in recognition of his research contributions and teaching accomplishments, including the LSE Class Teacher Award, given by the Department of History at the London School of Economics. His expertise in politics, communication, and urban space will contribute positively to the initiatives of the Atlanta Global Studies Center, especially those exploring the connections among global media, urban education, and sustainable development. | | AGSC Announces Yehimi Cambrón as Keynote Speaker for 2023 Atlanta Global Studies Symposium |  | Mark your calendars to attend the 2023 Atlanta Global Studies Symposium Keynote Address on Thursday, April 13, 2023. Meet DACAmented artist and activist, Yehimi Cambrón, who is based in Atlanta and was born in San Antonio Villalongín, Michoacán, México. She became undocumented at seven when she immigrated to Georgia. Cambrón's work celebrates immigrants and predominantly reflects the experiences of Undocumented Americans. Her landmark murals in Atlanta assert the presence and humanity of immigrants, depict the intersectionality within the immigrant community, and challenge the white, male-centered history that dictates who is worthy of a public, monumental celebration. Ms. Cambrón’s address will launch the 2023 Atlanta Global Studies Symposium, which presents groundbreaking multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary, and cross-sector collaborative research and initiatives that promote global education, language learning, sustainable development, and community engagement. The in-person event welcomes partners, faculty, students, community organizers, and the public to connect, to discover the impact of collaboration, and to celebrate the diversity and global vitality of the region. | | AGSC and GSU Office of International Initiatives Announces CFP for Virtual Exchange |  | GSU’s Office of International Initiatives (OII) and the Atlanta Global Studies Center welcome proposals from full-time faculty at Georgia State University who plan to implement Virtual Exchange (VE) activities for the first time in a course which will be taught in the Fall 2023 semester. Faculty who previously implemented VE in other courses (including those who may have received past support from OII) are eligible to apply if requesting support for VE in a new course. Wednesday, January 18: Brazil Consul General Luncheon Luís Cláudio Villafañe Gomes Santos, diplomat, historian and biographer was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 18, 1960. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Brasilia and a bachelor’s degree in Diplomacy from Rio Branco Institute (Brazilian diplomatic academy). He also has graduate studies in Political Science at New York University, a master’s and a doctorate in History from the University of Brasilia. As a diplomat, he served at the Brazilian Financial Office in New York (1990-1994), at several Brazilian Embassies including Mexico City (1994-1996), Washington (2000-2003), Montevideo (2003-2006) and Quito (2006-2010). He also served at the Brazilian Mission to the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (2010-2014), in Lisbon. He was Ambassador of Brazil to Nicaragua from 2017 to 2022. In the present day he is the Consul General of Brazil in Atlanta (USA). He is the author of several books about Brazil’s foreign relations history. He has published several articles in journals in Brazil, United States, Europe and Latin America, including one in the collection “História General de América Latina”, published by UNESCO. He is married to Sabrina Duque and the father of four children.

Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS): Part-time, virtual internships with flexible schedules. Interns can partner with Department of State diplomatic posts overseas and domestic offices, as well as other agencies. Critical Language Scholarship (CLS): Offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in U.S.- based degree programs to learn one of 15 languages through immersive study abroad institutes each summer. https://clscholarship.org/. Next Application Deadline: November 2023.
U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program: Paid internships offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters in Washington, D.C. and at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas. Interns will receive GS-04 pay level, including transportation/housing expenses.
