Director's Letter
January is a significant month in history--it begins a new year, we celebrate the historic National Western Stock Show (bedrock of western history), we celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and it is the beginning of the NHDC contest year. Saturday was an exceptional day at the contest in San Luis Valley at Adams State University. Close to 200 students competed--a large winner's circle now heads to Denver on April 29 (take a look at the photos below).
But this year's January is particularly historic, in a sad but celebratory way. Our own Kayla Gabehart is moving on to take a lead role as the Wirth Chair Program Coordinator in the School of Public Affairs as she completes the last eighteen months of her PhD. We watched Kayla, soon to be Dr. Gabehart, grow from an undergraduate intern to graduate assistant to office administrator to Associate Director. In that time, she helped grow our program from 7,000 to 27,000. She has helped create a true history academic journal, with many volumes to come. She has grown our program to become one of the premier programs around the world. It has been an historic honor to watch Kayla evolve--from beginning her studies to approaching the end. She is loved by so many and her sharp, quick wit will be missed. Kayla's influence on NHDC is one that is historic. She will still be here to help, and she'll still be a vital member of our CU Denver community. We'll never let her get quite all the way away. But, for now, it is time to celebrate her successes and the strong woman influencer she has become for our students--and for all of us. Congratulations, Kayla!
With that, speech! speech!
It's been the joy of my life to effectively grow up in NHDC. It nurtured me professionally in deep ways, but also was a refuge personally during some of the hardest moments of my life. I owe that to all our teachers, parents, students, and volunteers, partners, and most of all, to Celeste, my mentor and friend.
Whenever the future feels bleak, I remember all of the projects I've seen over the years, and I know that all of us on the History Day team are doing something right. Thank you for having me and for growing me as a person. You all mean so much to me. And, I'll never really completely go away.
My deepest thanks,
Kayla

NHDC & Friends of COSLI Chosen to Host Special Event
|
|
We are honored to have been chosen to host the event ahead of the induction ceremony for this year's class of extraordinary women (see below)!
Also, NHDC, in partnership with the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame will be unveiling a new curriculum geared to learn and teach about these women.
NHDC's Student Advisory Board has become so engaged in the work of Colorado Women's Hall of Fame, that they have chosen to begin the work to bring forth two official nominees of two amazing and strong women. One is an entrepreneur, an unwilling politician, a survivor, and a parent advocate. The other is an icon in Western History, founder of the Center of the American West, topic in the American AP History curriculum, and the epitome of a strong western woman. If you have interest in being involved in this work, please reach out to Celeste at celeste.archer@ucdenver.edu.

Historical Tip of the Month
The analysis in your history essays can take a number of forms. At times, your focus will be on true historical analysis (how and why things happened); at other times, you will find yourself taking a more historiographical approach (considering how other historians have dealt with a topic, intervening in scholarly debates, or examining the impact of different schools of thought).
