In 1967, as the Vietnam War neared its height, child actor Jerry Mathers stood on stage at the Emmys in full military uniform.
“I was very proud to be in [the military], and it’s something I thought I should do,” said Mathers, star of “Leave it to Beaver.” “At that time … a lot of people were not very happy with people in the military. I was very proud to be in the military. My dad was in the military. So I was very proud to do it.”

Nineteen veterans are in one of the biggest, most recent classes of lawmakers who served in the military. The 118th Congress’ cohort of 97 total veterans includes a historic first – Congress’ first two Black West Point graduates.
The New York National Guard deployed 172 vehicles and four trailers as part of its response to the Buffalo blizzard that resulted in more than 30 deaths. Efforts also included 3,755 household visits for health/welfare checks.
