AAUW CEO Gloria Blackwell wrote, "As AAUW members, we need to not only value the importance of intersectionality, diversity and equity, we must do the work — and it is lifelong work, core to our mission and vision." ... "I want each of you to commit to your own lifelong learning. It’s up to you to continue reading, listening, and taking action."
Portland Community College offers us an opportunity to do just that during the month of February by taking advantage of their hybrid virtual/in-person film festival. In lieu of holding our own monthly branch meeting, I invite you to view one or more of these films.

"The Cascade Festival of African Films shows us Africa through the eyes of Africans, rather than a vision of Africa packaged for Western viewers."
"Although the films cannot represent an entire continent, we hope to encourage American viewers to become interested and enrich their lens of African cultures."
"Opening night will be hosted at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd., at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3. Get ready for a live musical performance by Randa Benazizand a short keynote from Portland Community College President Dr. Adrien Bennings, followed by the multiple award-winning feature film “The Blue Caftan” (Morocco, 2022) – a film centered on the theme that love has no gender."
NCA and our allies will be hard at work on legislation to promote environmental justice in overburdened communities, regulate and support just transition for Portland's largest sources of diesel pollution and ensure a climate and community friendly transportation system. Please join us to learn more and connect to ways you can support these efforts!
We will be joined by the offices of Oregon State Representatives Thuy Tran and Dr. Maxine Dexter.
Join us to learn about the agenda for clean air!
Thanks to our members, our endowment fund had donations of $5432.00 at the beginning of 2023. This added to the $10,000.00 originally deposited into the endowment, puts us off to a good start to endow a minimal amount of $25,000. We want to ensure that AAUW will continue to support young returning students in the STEM fields by fully endowing our scholarships. (Online, choose “other” and write AAUW Portland Endowed.) Thank you again so much for your generosity.
Please invite and encourage the college-age women in your life to apply.
