Principal's Message
Dear O.H. Anderson Students and Families,
Just a reminder we will not have school on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, to celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday. MLK Day honors the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and serves to encourage all Americans to volunteer and make this day a day of service. Check out ideas for service learning for MLK Day and events in the Twin Cities. Here are videos we will watch on our morning newscast to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
Next week we will begin our winter FastBridge assessments both math and reading. We use this data to reflect on the growth of each student and plan the next steps for instruction. We will also have data days in February where teachers will reflect on the data and determine updated WIN groups for students. Here is the schedule:
Jan. 17- Reading
Jan. 18- Math
Jan. 19-20- Makeups and MySABERs
We want our students to do their best so please have them get a good night's sleep, eat a good breakfast, and remind them to have a growth mindset attitude to their best work even when things get hard. Please try to ensure students are at school in the morning as that is the optimal time for assessments.
Read below to learn about the different assessments students will take:
aReading- Assesses broad reading ability and predicts overall reading achievement in concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, orthography, and morphology. aReading is aligned with the Lexile® Framework for Reading.
CBMReading- This is a brief universal screening measure to assess and monitor reading fluency and accuracy. The student reads aloud for one minute on three separate grade-level reading passages. The CBMreading assessment is a highly reliable indicator of overall reading health.
AUTOreading- Assesses accuracy and automaticity with phonics, spelling, and vocabulary skills.
aMath- Measures broad math abilities and predicts overall math achievement in counting and cardinality; operations and algebraic thinking; number and operations in Base Ten; number and operations with fractions; measurement and data; and geometry.
CBMmath Automaticity- Measures a student’s fluency with arithmetic facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
mySAEBRS (my Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief, norm-referenced tool for screening all students to identify those who are at risk for social-emotional behavior (SEB) problems.
We will be also doing a small sampling of another phonics screener to determine which assessments best help us inform our instruction and interventions.
Assessment data will be available in ParentVue on Feb. 24, 2023.
Take care of yourself, your family, and each other.

Volunteer Opportunity Starting Next Week!!
Dear OHA parent(s), I am excited to give our Zephyrs a memorable experience during our cross-country ski unit but I’ll need your help. I’m seeking approximately 8-12 volunteers for each day (2 per class) during our cross-country ski unit starting January 19th thru the 26th. And as well as February 3rd thru the 9th.
3rd-grade students will be participating from 1:40-2:30 or 2:30-3:20 4th-grade students will be participating from 11:05-11:55 or 12:10-1:00 5th-grade students will be participating from 9:20-10:10 or 10:10-11:00
Volunteers will be asked to manage students and ensure students are moving, safe, and principled on the ski route. Volunteers will check in at the front office and meet at the gymnasium 5-10 minutes prior to their designated time. You may bring your own cross country skis, use skis at OHA, or walk with boots. Whatever you prefer is fine with me. I will provide snowshoes as an option to use as well.
Please note that if you have not completed your volunteer background check this will have to be completed to volunteer. You can access the background check through the district website please use the following link to complete VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECK. If you are unsure if you've had one, please contact Beth Hennen or Laura Nerison at 651-407-2300.

Book Club Volunteers Wanted
OHA is looking for volunteers who love to read and talk about books. You will be a part of a book club with 4-5 students. We would make sure your child is included if they are not already part of another WIN group. The commitment is to meet with the club for 30 minutes once a week to discuss the book. You would meet 4-5 weeks to finish the book. We will provide training sessions for you. Our goal for book clubs is to create a culture of loving reading, having deep conversations about books with peers, and having volunteers share their love for reading with our students.
If you are interested, please sign uphere.
All volunteers will need to complete abackground checkthrough the district before starting.

4th Graders earn money for good behavior, kindness, and good deeds in their classroom.
They celebrate with a Mall Day where kids create their own businesses, merchandise, and marketing plans. Here is a look at Mall day where they got to shop, buy, and sell items.
Congratulations to Ty Daniels from Mr. Merges's 4th-grade class for being the winner of the December Cop Kelly Cares About Kindness Program. Ty received a ride to school with Cop Kelly, he showed up at school with the lights flashing and kids cheering for him. He was caught being kind and nominated by Ms. Prather.
Way to go TY!!
We would like to invite you to celebrate a teacher or staff member who went over and above or always shines bright. Please fill out a Zephyr Celebration Form. I will deliver the kind wishes to them.
