Greetings,

Living in the Northeast most of my life, I've grown up with fireplaces. Starting a fire was always the man's job and it seemed like a magical process. But very recently I've learned how to make a fire in our wood burning stove. I'm very proud of my new skills. I've realized that making a fire is a bit of an art. Sometimes you have to baby the flames by blowing on them or adding a tiny bit more kindling. And you have to make sure there's a place for the oxygen to circulate. It's fun to build a pyramid and see how the fire catches. Sometimes it looks as if the fire is out. Then...bam! It catches.

Guess what this feels like? A lovely meditation! I'm totally focused and in the moment. The flames are hypnotic. And, of course, no two fires are alike. Next time you start a fire, see if it feels like a kind of meditation.

Yesterday I challenged myself to try something totally new. With a history of being the last kid picked on sports teams in grade school, I get a bit anxious doing exercise in a group. Tennis is different--even in doubles you are focused on your own skills. There usually isn't a whole team counting on you.

So I stepped out of my comfort zone and signed up for a "POUND class". I've been curious about it since the foster mom of my puppy told me she taught classes in Texas. And she's a super zesty. It's a combination of pounding an exercise ball with drum sticks, coordinated dance moves, and stretching. It was so damn fun. I couldn't stop laughing. When the teacher was going right, I was going left, when she was up, I was down. But nobody was there to judge. Apparently, though, I did take one regular's place and got in trouble for it.

How can you take this too seriously?
