ONEIROPHOBIA: FEAR OF DREAMS

Sleep My Pretty is a nightshirt in my series Foundational Garments – shirts that tell autobiographical stories. For this exhibition I am exploring my fear: Oneirophobia. This fear involves a reluctance to go to sleep because of frightening dreams. As a child, I believed a witch lived under my bed. I would awaken with a feeling of desperation -- afraid the witch would snatch me if any of my extremities neared the edge of my mattress. As an adult, I have reoccurring nightmares filled with my desperate attempts to protect myself and others from being murdered. Bad dreams and nightmares are a symptom of Post Traumatic Stress, and I trace my trauma back to an erratically difficult childhood marked by periods of calm and unpredictable moments of violent anger. I’m fascinated with garment construction and love to reverse engineer making clothes. The reference to the body, an absent body, and the ethereal qualities of organza combined in my nightshirt with the inflexible stiffness of the paper collar and cuffs to communicate the enduring strictures nightmares.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

Sinclair  Community  College  Art  Galleries

SAVE THE DATE - January 10 at noon
The Sinclair Art Department will host a virtual artist talk with current artists, Samuel Dunson and Stephen Marc, via Zoom.

BURNELL R. ROBERTS TRIANGLE GALLERY
Dunson is exhibiting his series titled Good Soil, which deals with accepting, then overcoming changes that occur throughout life. His work aims to tell stories personal to Dunson, but in a manner that is universal in its comprehension. His use of realism and stylization within the same work allows for weighty concepts to be approached in a light-hearted manner.

WORKS ON PAPER GALLERY
Street Story Montages by Marc, a documentary photographer, is a photographic series that explores American identity and sense of place. He captures public gatherings where American character is revealed and has created a series of montages from digitally stitched panoramas and photographs. The result is a view into American culture which is complex, socially charged, historically layered, and in constant flux.

COSI

Inspired by COSI's new travelling exhibit Tutankhamun-His Tomb and His Treasures, we invite artists to imagine, create, and illustrate their own ancient Egyptian inspired 2D artwork. If you found yourself in ancient Egypt during the reign of King Tut in 1300 BC, what art would you leave behind for people to find? Which ancient art, artifact, and/or architecture inspired you and how did you translate it into your own artwork? Does your piece include special symbols, figures, and other iconography that tell a story? Allow ancient Egyptian art and innovation spark your creativity and imagination.
