The Mayor's State of the City Address has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th from 12:00-1:30 pm at the Salem Conference Center.  In keeping with tradition Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem City Club and Downtown Rotary are the hosting this annual event.

“The 2012 State of the Oregon Courts Address”
Guest speaker: the Honorable Paul De Muniz, Chief Justice, Oregon Supreme Court
 
On Friday, January 20th, 2012 Salem City Club and the Marion County Bar Association are honored to co-host the Honorable Paul De Muniz, Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, for his sixth and final “State of the Oregon Courts Address.”  Chief Justice De Muniz has announced his retirement, effective December 31, 2012, This program will be his opportunity to review his time in office, to reflect on the legacy he will leave the Oregon judicial system, and to set the agenda for his final year in office.
 
Justice De Muniz began his term as Chief Justice on January 1, 2006, chosen by the other Supreme Court Judges. Before he joined the Oregon Supreme Court in January 2001, he served on the Oregon Court of Appeals, practiced law in Salem, as a special prosecutor in Douglas County, as a deputy public defender, and in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.  He has made many professional contributions including to Judicial Fitness, the Access to Justice for All Committee, the Oregon Supreme Court Task Force on Racial/Ethnic Issues in the Judicial System, Willamette University College of Law on the Board of Visitors and as an adjunct Professor of Law on the Oregon State Bar’s Board of Bar Examiners, and at the National Judicial College in Reno.
 
The “State of The Oregon Courts Address” is shown in State courts across Oregon.  But City Club and Marion County Bar Association members have the opportunity to ask the Chief Justice questions at the end of his address. 
 
This year’s event is once again sponsored by Ryan Collier, LLP.  Mr. Collier has sponsored this program for several years and his support is appreciated.

Announcing a Special Series: 
Lunch with Leaders in Education

The Oregon Department of Education reported a high school on-time graduation rate of 66% for the class of 2009, with nearly 14,000 students dropping out along the way.  A 2011 study reported that about 40 percent of students who enter Oregon colleges and universities drop out before earning a degree.
 
In 2011, Governor Kitzhaber and the legislature set in motion a sweeping reform of Oregon education from pre-K through university.  The goal?  To “ensure that every student earns a high school diploma and at least 80 percent go on to earn a two- or four-year degree.” 
 
Words such as“Reform,” “Innovation” and “Improvement” dominate state and national conversations about the future of American education.  How will our schools, colleges and universities – public and private -- meet the challenges ahead, especially in an era of declining budgets and surging enrollments?
 
Salem City Club is pleased to announce that four leaders in education will share the latest developments at their institutions, and for the State at large, and will offer their perspectives on the future of education.   
 
  • Friday, February 3:  Dr. Cheryl Roberts, President, Chemeketa Community College.
  • Friday, February 17:  Dr. Sandy Husk, Superintendent of Salem-Keizer Public Schools.
     
  • Friday, March 2:  Governor John Kitzhaber.
     
  • Friday, May 18:  Dr. Stephen Thorsett, sharing thoughts at the end of his first year as the new President of Willamette University.

Fifth Fridays
“Authors You Should Know and
 Books You Should Read”
 
 Salem City Club is pleased to announce its Fifth Friday series.  This series of three, fifth Fridays will be focused on local authors. 

  


THE FIRST FIFTH FRIDAY was a great success!   Approximately forty people enjoyed an excellent presentation by Russ Beaton on his latest  book with co-author Chris Maser, Economics and Ecology-United for a Sustainable World.  Thank you, Russ.  And special thanks to members Jan Margosian and Carla Mikkelson for organizing this successful Fifth Friday.

At the next Fifth Friday, March 30, 2012, we will hear Gwen Carr discuss her newly released book, Perseverance:  A History of African Americans in Oregon’s Marion and Polk Counties. 

The final Fifth Friday, Friday, June 29, 2012, will feature Oregon’s first and only woman governor, Barbara Roberts, discussing her newest book, Up the Capitol Steps.
