My work is most influenced by the modern human experience. I enjoy, and feel obligated to capture and share moments, ideologies, struggles, and the great debates of our time. Whether with a simple snapshot or a thoughtfully layered canvas of paint and ephemera, my goal is always to give the viewer something to chew on, protest, google, and enjoy.

With my camera I prefer to stand at the edge of something and capture it in images. I find my best role in a story is to be the visual narrator where I can lift the voice of the subject. My photographic stories are not always long or complex in a single frame.  Moments of humanity are best taken in bits and pieced together over time and space.

I also enjoy using imagery from pop culture ephemera to create a more deeply layered contemplation on canvas. I mix it with colors to evoke a mood to the narrative I am sharing. Because of my own experiences, I often lean into female gender stereotypes and consumer culture biases. These are also two topics abundantly available for exploration in the flotsam and jetsam of our contemporary ways of living.

At the intersection of these two mediums, I am exploring non-traditional techniques for presenting my own photos within the complexity of my mixed-media canvases. This involves combining various methods of image transfer with collage and painting techniques. I feel this brings together the more conceptual pieces of my art and their real-life examples.

With an eye for observing the social dynamics around her, Tania Nelson uses Mixed-Media Collage and Street Photography as her commentary on issues of personal identity, consumer culture, politics, historical narratives and so many other current points of division and unity.

Tania’s work carries the influence of contemporary American artists, from American Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art, and photographers from the WPA documentary projects to current Street Photographers on Instagram.

Tania was born and raised in the Wausau, Wisconsin.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay in 1999.  She studied in the interdisciplinary Social Change and Development program, with an emphasis in American Social Issues.  She is self-taught in the world of art and took it up as a profession after a nearly 20-year career in the banking industry.

Tania has exhibited in group shows in the Green Bay Area since 2021.

Ruth Foundation for the Arts: Providing Financial Opportunities with the Guidance of Artists

Rachel Hausmann Schall

The Ruth Foundation for the Arts (Ruth Arts) is a Wisconsin-based organization that has the power and financial backbone to begin to address the shortage of funding available for arts organizations in the Midwest and beyond. The newly launched foundation is named for Ruth DeYoung Kohler II, a lifetime advocate and supporter of the arts whose legacy lives on at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, where she served as director for over 50 years, and through the creation of the Art Preserve. Now, her passion and influence will be felt through the impact of Ruth Arts, with a $440 million trust, a unique approach to arts philanthropy, and a creative distribution model. Executive Director of Ruth Foundation for the Arts Karen Patterson shares, “The task from the very beginning was to translate Ruth as a person into a foundation, honoring her spirit of generosity, experimentation, and by connecting her vision to our current times; bridging art making with community building…all in the spirit of the Midwest.”

Artist Spotlight: Anna Boothe (01/01/2023)

My artmaking parallels my daily focus on seeking integrity through awareness, conscientious interaction, and balance.

I believe we all search for referents that help us to understand our world and circumstances. The objects we create and/or gather, and how we arrange them, promote a pseudo-explanation for what we seek.

Imbued in my objects are references to historical artifact, a sense of preciousness, and the intangibility, yet familiarity associated with collaged memory. My visual vocabulary features shapes derived from nature and the human form, including the hand motif as it represents a ubiquitous cross-cultural human tool of expression.
