Creative Writing Master Class with Jake Lamar
 In-Person Events | February 2023

In this Master Class led by author Jake Lamar, participants will explore the architecture of the well-made text. How does one create suspense, develop a plot, find the voice of a narrator? Sessions will be held in English on the following dates:

February 1, 8, 15, 22 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 25, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (breakfast and lunch included)

The fee for the course is 600€.

Such Sweet Thunder: Ellington Plays Shakespeare 
Entre Nous Series
 In-Person Event | January 19 | 7:00 p.m. (Paris)

For the Stratford, Ontario Shakespeare Festival of 1957, the American composers Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn created Such Sweet Thunder, a jazz concert honoring Shakespeare. This conversation and slideshow between Robert G. O'Meally and Courtney Bryan will examine scores and recordings of Duke and Strays’ dark bluesy “harlemizations” of certain Shakespearean scenes and characters. This event will be held in English.

The Entre Nous series is co-organized by Columbia Global Centers | Paris, the Institute for Ideas and Imagination, and The American Library in Paris.

Mauvaises Filles 
Film Screening
 In-Person Event | January 23 | 7:00 p.m. (Paris)

A screening of the recently released film Mauvaises Filles, directed by Émérance Dubas. Hosted by Christelle Taraud, the evening will include a reading by producer Sandrine Lanno from the stage production (Théâtre du Rond Point, March 2023), and a discussion with historian Véronique Blanchard. The film will be shown in its original French audio with English subtitles. The reading and discussion will be held in French.

This event is co-organized by Columbia Global Centers | Paris and the Columbia Undergraduate Programs in Paris.

Au revers de la nuit 
Book Launch
 In-Person Event | January 24 | 7:00 p.m. (Paris)

 

After Maestro and Une fille de passage, the publisher Mercure de France presents Cécile Balavoine's latest novel, Au revers de la nuit. This book launch will feature a discussion in French between author Cécile Balavoine and editor Isabelle Gallimard.

This event is co-organized by Columbia Global Centers | Paris, the Columbia M.A. in History and Literature, the Columbia Undergraduate Programs in Paris, and Mercure de France.

Reading with Denis Podalydès
In-Person Event | January 18 | 7:00 p.m. (Paris)

The Association Textes & Voix, Nadine Eghels, Tschann Librairie, and Mercure de France invite you to a reading by author Denis Podalydès of his autobiography Célidan disparu. Advanced email registration (contact@textes-et-voix.fr or via the link below) is required. Tickets are 15€, payable at the door (8€ for students and job-seekers). This reading will take place in French.

Kate Daudy, visual artist
Activist Arts
In-Person Event | January 31 | 7:00 p.m. (Paris)

Kate Daudy is a British activist artist whose artworks are based on research and collaboration. She inscribed and embroidered a UNHCR tent with the words of refugees to share their message with people around the world. The piece, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” has since been exhibited at venues including St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Manchester Art Gallery, BIAS Palermo, and is currently touring cities in Spain.This event will take place in English.

Global Thought Leaders

The Committee on Global Thought, in partnership with the Paris, Istanbul, and Rio de Janeiro Global Centers, invites you to apply for the Global Thought Leaders program. This pilot certificate program will cultivate participants' ability to think strategically from a global perspective about their work, lives, and transnational issues. Applications for the Spring 2023 program are due by January 30th.

Columbia SIPA has established a new Master of Public Administration in Global Leadership for accomplished policy practitioners, managers in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and other professionals with at least 10 years of progressively senior experience.

The program is designed to add policy expertise, polish analytical skills, and enhance leadership capabilities to advance participants’ careers to the highest level.
