Napa County Land Trust Works to Acquire Walt Ranch
The End of a Painful Saga -
The Beginning of a New Era

This last week has brought another wave of good news along with the rain. To our surprise, the unimaginable has happened: The Napa County Land Trust announced their intent to purchase Walt Ranch from Hall Wines. The Press Democrat and Napa Register provided excellent coverage of the fuller story.

It’s not a done deal yet. To make it happen the Land Trust will have to raise the purchase funds by May 31, as stipulated in the signed contract. CEO Doug Parker declined to state the total sale price but noted that Craig and Kathryn Hall, who own Hall Wines, have agreed to donate more than a quarter of the value of the land. That amounts to one of the largest gifts the land trust has ever received. Hoped-for state grants would provide much of the money, with another $7 million to $9 million needed beyond that.

This purchase will protect thousands of mature trees in our precious Ag Watershed lands, at least two priority wildlife corridors, the biological “hotspots” rich in biodiversity, and the wells of the Circle Oaks community. In no small part, it will also help Napa County reach its goal of net GHG emissions by 2030.

"Despite elation at the outcome, It is somewhat discouraging to think that all this effort over the last so many years was just a process of maximizing the resale price. That process, however, has been instrumental in bringing to the forefront the land use issues that the county must now confront in an age of global warming. And it has brought together a community of activists needed to continue to promote those and other development issues. A win for everyone."

In Memoriam: Laura Tinthoff
We mourn her passing and deeply miss her bright spirit.

Laura served on the Board of Napa Vision 2050 for several years. She initially contacted us to help her neighborhood group challenging a Commercial Solar Project on an adjacent rural residential parcel. She was generous in her art skills, helping design our logo, and her continuous research and general kindness. Below is a statement from her friend and colleague, Eileen Pereira.

"The threat of industrial solar projects in our beloved watershed proved to be the catalyst that awoke residents in Coombsville. Laura was a key partner in the fight to prevent Commercial Solar Projects from locating in residential areas and in our Watershed.

Laura’s superb research skills were key in the crash course on Commercial Solar that we were all forced to take. She was able to locate and enlist key players within the field who lent their credentials and expertise to our cause. She was firm, persistent, and credible in her presentations to the County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors.

The team’s success was largely due to Laura’s work and dedication. Not only was the Commercial Solar Project planned for the Coombsville area withdrawn, but the Board of Supervisors passed an Ordinance that will not permit Commercial Solar Projects in the County’s Ag Watershed going forward. This is no small achievement. Her strong conviction, substantiated by some powerful facts that she had researched and presented, helped win the day for our Ag Watershed.
