Access and collaboration are critical for innovation. As we welcome back members and friends to Kendall Square this month, we're offering a central hub for new members, neighbors, partners and events to connect our vibrant and growing community. If you have something you'd like to share with your peers and Kendall, we want to hear from you.
In this issue: Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons, community events, New England Jazz Collaborative, CVS, City updates and more.

The Big Story
The Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons
|
|
For more than 50 years, Just A Start has been an integral part of our local community, focused on meeting the fundamental needs of individuals and families providing access to stable housing and sustainable careers that are essential building blocks of equitable communities. Their importance to the life sciences community cannot be understated. For example, their Biomedical Training Program has prepared hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds to enter the life sciences industry and dozens of biopharma companies have hired Just A Start graduates.
Now, Just A Start is creating The Economic Mobility Hub at Rindge Commons, a 70,000 square foot state of the art facility near Alewife in Cambridge.
“Just A Start’s Biomedical Careers Training Program has a long and successful track record of training and developing residents for new professional pathways that exist in the life science industry,” said Sarah MacDonald, President of Life Science Cares Boston. “We are thrilled to support the organization as they build a facility that allows them to grow that program and others, a facility truly represents the future of opportunity in Cambridge and beyond.”
Just A Start is holding a meeting on January 18 to share additional details about the way community and industry can get involved.

Collective Signatures Mark MIT
Agnieszka Kuran's The End of Signature light sculptures at the rear façade of 238 Main and 45 Hayward Streets features two unconventional portraits of joint signatures of thousands of MIT scientists, interns, collaborators and residents. Kurant developed these iterations of The End of Signature in collaboration with three doctoral students in MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL)— Katie Lewis, Divya Shanmugam, and Jose Javier Gonzalez Ortiz—as well as their advisor, Professor John Guttag.
"The sculpture at 238 Main Street—which amalgamates signatures of past and current scientists, students, interns and academics at the Institute—points toward correcting that history. The second sculpture [on E37] is based on signatures of people who live in the Kendall Square and East Cambridge area.” said critic, Christy Lange.
The sculptures were made using machine learning system (called a GAN, a generative adversarial machine learning approach). Read more here.

Kendall Gets A Pharmacy
In surveys of people who live and work in Kendall Square, a CVS was the second most-requested retailer behind a grocery store. In 2019, Kendall got Brothers Marketplace at One Broadway. This month, we welcomed CVS at 238 Main Street. A massive thank you to MITIMCo, MIT, and CVS for making some of our retail dreams come true!
