January 9th is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (LEAD). Too often we do not take time to highlight the great work that is done throughout the country by law enforcement in the area of elder abuse prevention. The EAGLE team is fortunate to receive examples of the great work that is happening across the country. Here are three examples:
Dallas Police Department
The Dallas Adult Protective Services would like to thank Detective Angelica Martinez and Detective Ryan McCarrick for their commitment to our elderly and disabled in our community. Detective Martinez is always so kind and helpful to assist us when needed. Detective McCarrick is always very responsive to any request for information. Both have made themselves available on short notice to meet with us regarding our most vulnerable population. Any time that we have needed assistance, they have gone above and beyond to help. Thank you for all you do in keeping our community safe.
Gilmer County Sheriff
APS in Georgia recognizes Detective Russell Henson with Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office. He is a great asset to Adult Protective Services. Det. Henson is reliable and always willing to go on home visits with APS case managers. APS case managers always know that Det. Henson has their backs. Det. Henson is knowledgeable about APS situations and laws surrounding elder abuse. Det. Henson is great to work with and APS is so thankful to have him!
Massachusetts State Police
Sergeant Grant has spent the past 22 years assigned to the State Police Detective Unit (SPDU) housed at the Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC). Sergeant Grant not only manages the unit, but, during his time at the DPPC, he has shared his decades of experience in this field by participating in trainings, locally, statewide, and nationally, on the topic of crimes against persons with disabilities and the law enforcement response. Sergeant Grant has repeatedly gone above and beyond to enhance cooperation and communication amongst various service agencies and law enforcement. Sergeant Grant is truly appreciated for all he has done for the DPPC, its staff, the APS community, and most importantly, the victims with disabilities. However, we have many more precincts that deserve acknowledgement. EAGLE is committed to highlighting all of the good work that is happening so we will continue to publicize these good works in our Hero Highlights section of the newsletter. A special shout out to Jennifer Spoeri, Executive Director of the National Adult Protective Services Association, NAPSA for her collaboration in gathering these stories. If you have someone you would like to show your appreciation for, share it with us to be featured in our Hero Highlights section.
