Parent Resources

Your student is continuing to grow and enhance their skills through our social and emotional (SEL) learning program. So far, they have practiced managing strong thoughts and feelings, and worked to strengthen their social awareness skills.

Over the next four weeks students will focus on relationship skills, which include strategies for developing and maintaining connections with others. Relationships bring joy, connection, and support to our lives. In order to have strong and healthy relationships, students must learn how to handle conflict, communicate effectively, and nurture their connections so that they can grow in healthy ways.

This week's topic is: Establishing Relationships

Making new friends and meeting new people in middle school comes with more challenges than in elementary school. Many challenges can surface as students grow, including differing interests and hobbies among friends, increased focus on relationships with peers, and increased difficulties with meeting new people that stem from a greater awareness of the thoughts of others. Students will focus on gaining concrete skills and strategies for forming new relationships, including skills for problem-solving around barriers and challenging negative thoughts.

To strengthen this lesson, try this activity with your student at home:
When your student expresses concern and hesitancy about trying a new social hobby or talking to someone new, validate their fears and encourage them to 1) challenge any negative thoughts they might be having, and 2) be bold and face their fears! Bonus: set a small reward for your student if they choose to face their fears.

Our next general PTO Meeting is January 27th at 8:30 in the Learning Commons. The EGRHS LYD Parent Advisory Board will be presenting at this meeting.

Current COVID-19 Guidance

If your child tests positive for COVID-19, 5 days of isolation is recommended. Individuals may return any time during days 6-10 if their symptoms are largely resolved and fever-free without the use of medication. It is also recommended that a mask be worn on days 6-10. Each school is required to report all communicable diseases to the Kent County Health Department (KCHD). If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please notify your building administrator. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!

Students are issued “Way to Go” cards for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility or Personal Best by doing the right thing!  As students receive these cards, they are placed in the container located in the Main Office. Every Friday, names are drawn and announced during the afternoon announcements.  Each student selected, has the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize basket simply as a way to say “Thanks, we appreciate and recognize you!”

Our winners for this week are:

Cameron Hartfield, 6th Grade
Addie Huyser, 7th Grade
Elsa VanDeven, 8th Grade
Lukas Wing, 8th Grade
