TOMORROW: Ground Game Texas and San Antonio Justice Charter Coalition To Submit 35,000 Signatures for May Ballot
New charter initiative would decriminalize abortion care and marijuana possession, ban no-knock police warrants and chokeholds, and encourage citations instead of arrests for nonviolent crimes.

San Antonio, TX (Monday, January 9, 2023) - Tomorrow, on Tuesday, January 10th at 3 PM, Ground Game Texas, Act 4 SA, and a coalition of more than a dozen organizations including the Texas Organizing Project (TOP), Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL SATX), SA Stands, and MOVE Texas will submit more than 35,000 signatures for the San Antonio Justice Charter.

The San Antonio Justice Charter will amend the City Charter of San Antonio to adopt a justice policy that will reduce unnecessary arrests, mitigate racial bias, and save scarce public resources through a comprehensive set of popular reforms, including:

  • Ending enforcement of low-level marijuana possession
  • Ending enforcement of abortion "crimes"
  • Banning no-knock police warrants
  • Banning police chokeholds
  • Prioritizing citations instead of arrests for low-level nonviolent crimes

"Once again, Ground Game Texas is proud to partner with incredible local organizations to successfully put popular, progressive reforms directly on the ballot that would improve public safety and protect basic rights," said Julie Oliver, Executive Director of Ground Game Texas. "The San Antonio Justice Charter is a groundbreaking initiative that will make San Antonio a model for public safety reform across Texas and the nation, and we look forward to putting it in front of voters on the May ballot."

“So many long hours, filled with sweat, and even some tears, went into gathering these signatures and we couldn’t be more grateful to the incredible folks who were out there putting in the hard work,” Ananda Tomas, Executive Director of ACT 4 SA stated. “We had less than three months to gather 35,000 signatures with a shoestring budget. It goes to show just how much San Antonio wants the Justice Charter amendments on the ballot.”
