LERU New Year's Dinner Debate:
Universities and Sustainability
26 January 2023, Brussels

Dear <<First Name>>

Sustainable development is high on the agenda at universities in Europe and worldwide. Therefore, the theme of the League of European Research Universities' (LERU) annual New Year's Dinner Debate for 2023 will be "Universities and Sustainability". This invitation-only event takes place on 26 January 2023 at the Résidence Palace in Brussels. About 50 important LERU partners from the EU institutions, research organisations and our 23 member universities will attend, so this is an excellent opportunity to mingle with high-level experts, opinion leaders and policymakers. As places are limited, we kindly ask you to register as soon as possible and 17 January 2023 at the latest.

During the dinner debate, leading figures from LERU universities and from prominent organisations will engage in conversations about three important dimensions of sustainable development:
  • On the topic of campus operations, they will discuss inter alia how universities implement and continually refresh their strategies for sustainable development, how they invest and prioritise limited resources, and how they get staff and students on board.
  • On the topic of education for sustainable development, they will explore questions such as what universities aim for, what challenges they run into along the way and what lessons can be learned.
  • On the topic of connecting with the world around them, they will focus on how universities contribute to making the cities and regions where they are based more sustainable, for example in the context of the EU Mission on climate-neutral and smart cities.
Confirmed speakers:
  • Ms Rosalinde van der Vlies, Director Clean Planet at the Directorate-General Research and Innovation of the European Commission
  • Prof. Toomas Asser, Rector of the University of Tartu
  • Prof. Gerard Govers, KU Leuven Vice-Rector of the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, also responsible for Sustainability Policy
