President's Message

A few years ago, uniting the women of Monmouth & Ocean counties through the sport of golf was a dream. Two women (hint: Judy Chevalier was one) explored the interest and possibility of such a collaboration. Women were invited to play with other women on a regularly scheduled basis. They would strengthen their alliances into friendships by meeting after the round for a bite and beverage.

Covid ensued. Pop Up golf was created as the ladies invited others to play golf — which was deemed “safe.” The women golfers of the community saw the power of women working together.

In January 2021, the LPGA Amateurs Coastal NJ announced its formation, welcoming players. The chapter surpassed its goal of 50 members by more than 100%!  A few founding members (Alice Anselmo, Karen Kantor, Judy Chevalier, and Ann Mackey) took on leadership roles to help create and develop a structured women’s network of golfers in the region with the support of the national group: the LPGA. Additional effort was needed to organize and communicate with the membership. A huge shoutout to Lara Burke, Arlene Rodriguez, Robbie Cohen, Susan Murphy, Liz Dickerson, Sandy Robertson, and Gabrielle Salemi for their contributions.

Entering our 3rd year, we comprise over 175 members (some multi-chapter), offer 10 leagues, monthly (golf) events, fundraise for charitable causes, offer GHIN signups and renewals and are growing our competitive interest and activity!

Our current leadership, (we are all volunteers), has put together an exciting calendar for 2023. We invite you to attend our February Zoom informational series. Get to know us. Get to know more about golf.

Preview our calendar. Find ways to connect and belong.

When women work together, great things happen!

Getting to Know Coastal Chapter NJ Zoom Series

Member respondents to our recent member survey provided invaluable information on their areas of interest and personal growth for the 2023 season. Using the survey results, we are pleased to offer four short zoom webinars covering areas of member concerns where you will have the opportunity to ask your questions. Starting Thursday, February 2nd, and continuing for 3 additional Thursday evenings from 7 pm to 8 pm, we are excited to offer our members the following:

Use this Webinar RSVP  link to let us know which sessions/dates you plan to attend. Participants will receive an email reminder of the Zoom link the day before the session. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom!!

Tee-Off Luncheon: Save The Date
Saturday, March 25th
Location: Riverview Pavilion, Belmar, NJ
The Tee Off Luncheon is the showcase event of the Coastal NJ chapter and its supporting sponsors and partners. There will be information tables and shopping. It is an energizing afternoon of fun and games, gifts, buffet lunch with cash bar, a guest speaker, fashion show and prizes and basket drawings! This event readies its participants for the upcoming golf season and handicap and league registration. It is a MUST ATTEND EVENT!

Invite a friend. Registration details are coming soon and will be posted to our website and sent to membership via email.

Help make this a successful fun day by volunteering at the event for such things as room set up, greeting guests, selling 50/50 tickets, distributing gifts or perhaps serving as a model for the fashion show. A complete list of volunteer opportunities can be found on our chapter website:  https://chapters.lpgaamateurs.com/chapter-news/NJCO#tee-off-volunteer-opportunity  As an added benefit, a few hours of your time earns you V.I.P. rewards!

2023 Leagues

The following is a list of leagues currently planned for our members for the 2023 season. This is subject to updates. Registration will open March 27th at 8 a.m. Additional league information will be posted soon to our website.

The Winter Indoor League
The inaugural season for the coastal chapter’s winter indoor leagues has 25 Coastal Chapter members participating in either the Wednesday evening league or the Thursday morning 9 hole league. The season began playing in British Columbia on a beautiful, lush course. Players were fortified with British tea & scones. Our next stop was Hawaii where fresh pineapples and Mai Tai drinks didn’t help some from landing golf balls on the lava rocks surrounding many of the holes. We played closest to the pin on the par 3 hole with the following winners in each bay:

Thursday league winners were: Clare McDowell, Robbie Cohen, Lynn Jewell and Angela Haslach tied with Beth Staub.

Wednesday League winners were: Cate Knight, Cathy Cox, and Ann Mackey.

Thank you to Tee2Greeen (T2G) for awarding our winners with a sleeve of golf balls. Next up is a narrow course (think Shark River) in Germany. Here’s hoping the hot pretzels and beer aid in course strategy among the trees.

Judy Synder summed it up best with her comments, “What a welcoming group and a great way to keep swinging during the winter”. Lynn Jewell added, ”Just do it! You’ll have fun!”

Play for Pink Update

The LPGA Amateurs Play for P.I.N.K (Prevention, Immediate diagnosis, New technology, Knowledge) events donated a record $5 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in 2022. This is a $1 million increase from the prior year.  An email from the BCRF states “…PFP will fund 20 research projects…This donation would not have been possible without each of you!”

The Coastal Chapter is proud to have participated in Play for P.I.N.K. and through our members participation, we contributed over $3,000.

Chapter Sponsorships
We Need Your Help!
Sponsorships and partnerships help defray the Chapter’s administrative expenses and allow us to offer educational, networking and charitable activities to our members and local communities. Sponsors are the “WOW” of our organization. We have enjoyed the support of a variety of sponsors and are working to grow our relationships with businesses as our chapter continues to grow. Becoming a sponsor exposes a business locally, nationally and internationally.

Our members can help in two ways. First, support our sponsors. Show them the value of sponsorship. Second, we need your help in procuring new sponsors for the upcoming season. Let your friends, relatives or businesses you associate with know the benefits of partnering with the LPGA Amateurs and our Coastal NJ Chapter.
