Dear friends,
This Sunday is New Year's Day when we celebrate Mary as Mother of God. This title of the Blessed Virgin has been used since the 3rd century. In Greek it is Theotokos or God-bearer. She was formally given this title at the Council of Ephesus in the year 431 and it is simply a way of proclaiming the true divinity of Jesus and her role as his mother. We use this ancient title every time we pray the Hail Mary. Click here for the scripture readings.
