Sunday, January 8, 10 a.m.  Or Emet member Rachel Wexelbaum will present “In the Spirit of Harvey Milk: 2022-2023 Humanistic Jewish Role Model of the Year” at the Talmud Torah of St. Paul (768 Hamline Ave. S, St. Paul). Wexelbaum will demonstrate how Milk embodied Humanistic Jewish values while uplifting some contemporary LGBTQ+ Jewish activists who are equally worthy of the award. Monday, January 9, 1 p.m. The Mighty Mites were a football team of a Fort Worth orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes—or even a football—to playing for the Texas state championships. Over the course of their winning season these underdogs and their resilient spirit became an inspiration to their city, state, and an entire nation in need of a rebound, even catching the attention of President Franklin D. Thursday, January 12, 6:30 p.m. You’re invited to the Opening Reception of DELIcious History: Jewish Delis of the Upper Midwest: The Appetizer with an author talk and book signing with Wendi Zelkin Rosenstein (granddaughter or Lincoln Del owners). Sit in a vintage Lincoln Del booth and debate the virtues of pastrami on rye versus corned beef and chopped liver on pumpernickel.​ This interactive exhibit at the Tychman Gallery, Minneapolis JCC (4330 Cedar Lake Rd, Mpls) is an appetizer to stir memories you’ll share with JHSUM so they can incorporate them into part two of this exhibit in the future. Thursday, January 19, 11:30 a.m. The wind and the rain at the window sing from the narrator’s throat, and the train that traverses the Jezreel valley goes out of Eden to encompass the whole land of Havilah. Pictures/Reproductions is Haim O. Rechnitzer’s third poetry book and his first bilingual one. You’re invited to  “When Words Become…” the zoom poetry lecture.  All the poems in this book were collaboratively translated from Hebrew to English with Haim's wife, Claire. Saturday, January 21, 7:30 p.m. Minneapolis-based musician, educator, and singer-songwriter Tzipporah Johnson is hosting a release show for her first full-length album, Tales of the Diaspora at The Hook and Ladder (3010 Minnehaha Ave, Mpls).  Tzipporah's Jewishly-influenced blend of folk-rock will be sharing the stage with local klezmer powerhouse Sarah Larsson and Rimon co-founder David Jordan Harris’ talented Sephardic music ensemble, Voices of Sepharad. Thursday, January 26, 7 p.m. See the world premier of Echoes of the Holocaust at the Glanton Theater (2608 Blaisdell Ave S, Mpls).  This play traces the experiences of eleven Holocaust survivors' personal stories who fell victim to Hitler's brutal war against the Jews during the final days of World War II. The play contains real stories, poetry, historical footage, and archival music as the survivors return to their hometowns and to the ghettos and concentration camps in which they were imprisoned. Thursday/Friday, January 26/27th, 7 p.m. A woman, propelled by the memory of her mother's rescue from the Holocaust, is drawn to help asylum seekers in the US. As she attempts to navigate the asylum system, she encounters a rich mosaic of people who are fleeing persecution, and others determined to welcome them. Ongoing. The Milken Archive is a source of quality Jewish art and culture. Currently, you can explore American Jewish Music with Leonard Nimoy. Ongoing. Join other dancers from the Twin Cities and from around the world in a live Zoom Israeli dance session. Led by Shira and Michael Schwartz, the group meets weekly every Sunday from 6-9 PM (CT). The first half-hour is teaching, then circle dancing till 8 pm. 8-9 pm is partner dancing. What a great way to add needed exercise to our pandemic lives along with the cultural and social connection we are all craving! Ongoing. Shira and Michael have also started a live Israeli dance session. Dance every Thursday from 7-9:30 pm at the Tapestry Folk Dance Center (3748 Minnehaha Ave, Mpls). Tuesday, January 3, 7 p.m. Rabbi Tobias Moss will begin a monthly class “The Jews Are Coming.” As profound as Torah study, and as funny as Saturday Night Live, “The Jews Are Coming” (HaYehudim Baim) is an Israeli sketch comedy show that explores Jewish history and traditions. As we laugh at ourselves, we will discover the textual depth that underlies this uniquely Jewish form of comedy. In-Person at Temple Israel. FFI: templeisrael.com/


Wednesday, January 18, 6:30 p.m. The Ongoing Moment is intended to be a monthly meeting for photographers who wish to increase their understanding and improve their practice of the medium. The title refers to the idea that "we share experiences that are formally similar.” It is intended for all levels and for all interests from landscape to abstract, reportage to street photography. The Ongoing Moment will review both photographic prints and Hi-Res digital images. The Ongoing Moment is hosted by Mpls-based photographers Richard Ott and Walter Horishnyk. Founded in 2004 to honor the memory of Karen Siegel-Jacobs, the Keren Or (Ray of Light) Contest, is a creative arts contest for Minnesota Jewish students in grades 7 - 12. Students are invited to submit poems, prose (short stories and creative essays - approximately 1200 words), and black and white or color photographs. Prizes are awarded in each category and winning entries will be published on Keren Or and Rimon’s website and on display for a period of time at the Sabes JCC. Julie Muskat from Deeper Water Arts is offering various workshops including Creative Choreography/Movement Games. Relax with a guided movement meditation, then take the option to re-energize through creative movement play! We will play games, compose mini-dance scores, and develop ways to begin creating something from nothing. Yes, everyone is a dancer in this workshop! Through an intentionally positive space, participants will get to create and grow in the community, celebrate their physical selves and abilities, build self-worth, and most importantly, have fun! Minnesota State Arts Board Recruiting Grant Application Reviewers. The Arts Board seeks individuals from a variety of backgrounds to review grant applications remotely, serving a four-week term sometime between September 2022 and February 2023. Public funds belong to all Minnesotans, so a broad spectrum of perspectives and experiences is vital to our grant-making process. Serving as an Arts Board grant application reviewer, you’ll not only gain insight into what makes an effective application but also forge new connections with fellow reviewers who share your passion while supporting the arts community in Minnesota. You’ll receive a modest financial stipend for your time providing feedback on applications and helping determine which will be recommended to receive funding. The Lab offers free access to flatbed scanners (8.5x11” and 11x17”), Adobe Creative Cloud programs and artwork photo documentation space. The A.V. Closet is a Springboard for the Arts service that allows artists to borrow cameras, lighting equipment, projectors and other audio-visual equipment, and it's back on University Avenue! Equipment can be borrowed for one week (six overnights from Friday to the following Friday) at no charge, for one rental period per month. You can check out up to six items per rental period. If you need to check out more than six items, contact us to make special arrangements. There is an annual fee of $20.
