Hot Tips For Your Summer Clean-Up

'Tis the season (to empty out the garage)

If you're like thousands of other Aussies, the summer break is prime-time for decluttering. That means its also the peak period for the Bulky Waste Clean-Up service. We're rolling out a messaging campaign to help you clean up the right way.

Little changes in the way people use the service can have large knock-on effect for the community and our ability to deliver to a high standard. We've designed a series of messages to help residents use the service correctly - and encourage cleaner streets across the LGA.

It's all part of a larger strategy to combat illegal dumping. You can help out just by doing the right thing yourself, or by reminding others of best practices. See below for more on some of the issues we're focusing on.

Small items can cause big problems!

Small items can be a major issue when they're put out for Council Clean-Ups. The service is designed to help you get rid of large items, so little things often slip through the cracks - literally. Things like toys and documents, or other loose objects, often spill and spread. This can pollute waterways and leave your street looking messy.

The good news is that you can put most things in your red household bin. If it's small enough to fit, that's the best place to put it. The exception to this is dangerous items like lithium batteries that should always be disposed of at an appropriate collection point. And of course, if you can recycle it, re-use it, re-purpose it, or give it away, that's always better than sending it to landfill.

Messy piles are dangerous piles

When items are stacked too high, or are poorly balanced, they can tip and endanger your neighbours, children and pets. They're also more likely to spread and block footpaths - making your street harder to navigate.

Pile your items no higher than 1.5m, and make sure everything is stable and squared away.

The early bird encourages dumping...

Putting items out early makes your street look messy, which helps normalise dumping. It also gives other people more opportunity to add to your pile, which could tip you over the limit for your collection.

You can help fight illegal dumping by putting your items out the night before. Limiting the amount of time with collection piles on the street improves life for everyone in your area, and makes it easier for us to identify, investigate and remove illegal dumps.

Weed Watch: Climbing Asparagus

Asparagus Africanus

Climbing Asparagus is a priority weed that outcompetes native plants and causes serious injuries to humans and animals. If you see it, please let us know!

Climbing Asparagus is a thorny vine with fern-like fronds. It has small white flowers and berries that turn from green to red.

The vines quickly smothers large areas, making them impenetrable, and is very hazardous to control.

If you see Climbing Asparagus, please contact our Biosecurity weed officer on 9707 9000 and ask for assistance.

Have Your Say: Clean City Strategic Plan

Delivering a place you can be proud of

The community told us that town centres, illegal dumping, public toilets, parks and healthy waterways are the areas we should focus on to achieve a clean, tidy and well-maintained City.

In response, we've developed the draft Clean City Strategic Plan to guide our efforts, and this is your chance to tell us about the issues and places that are important to you.
