Our improved charity evaluation processs

Each year, we spend several months evaluating highly impactful animal advocacy organizations to identify those that work most effectively and are able to do the most good with additional donations. We recently published four blog posts detailing the four criteria we assess: Programs, Cost Effectiveness, Room for More Funding, and Leadership and Culture. You can also learn more about our charity evaluation process in our charity evaluation process explainer video.

ACE fundraising update

ACE’s Recommended Charity Fund has met its $300,000 matching challenge goal! Thank you to everyone who donated and helped us unlock this additional funding to help reduce animal suffering around the globe. In January, we will distribute the funds to our Top and Standout Charities. While we’re proud to have raised funds for our recommended charities, we have yet to reach our fundraising goal for our own budget. ACE still needs funding to carry out our essential work in 2023 and continue helping people help animals. Please consider supporting our work and our team by making a year-end donation to ACE today. Thank you!

Charity resource: how can charities steward donor relationships to increase monthly support?

A nonprofit organization is built on a foundation of donors that provide the necessary support to achieve its mission. How an organization engages with donors is essential to creating long-term, mutually positive relationships. Monthly donors, in particular, should have a more personalized experience and receive regular updates on the progress of a charity’s work and the impact of their gifts. So, what are the best ways to steward donors? We asked four professionals in the animal advocacy space.

ACE all-staff break

ACE team members will be out of the office from January 2 to January 6 for an all-staff break. We recognize that it takes a healthy, well-rested team to deliver quality work and do the most good for animals, so we are giving everyone at ACE a week to recharge before kicking off our plans for 2023. We will return on Monday, January 9. Our invaluable team works to support both ACE and the efforts of effective charities around the globe. Visit our website to learn more.

RESEARCH RECAP

In this study, researchers tested whether a vegan diet affects perceptions of job candidates. Participants (adults in Poland) read the CV of a fictitious job candidate and evaluated the candidate’s warmth, competence, and suitability for the job. Results showed that vegan male candidates were perceived as less competent than non-vegan male candidates, particularly when applying for a stereotypically male job. The results add to the growing literature showing associations between anti-vegan attitudes and gender stereotypes.

The authors of this UK-based study compared consumers’ attitudes toward conventional, plant-based, and cultured meat. Participants were shown images of food products, which were labeled as either conventional, plant-based, or cultured. Plant-based alternatives were evaluated as less satisfying, but healthier, than conventional meat. Cultured meat was perceived as equally healthy, but more disgusting, than conventional meat. The researchers also discussed the implications of highlighting healthiness to promote alternatives to animal products.

The role of animal agriculture in climate change is receiving increasing public attention. But do consumers consider climate change when making meat-purchasing decisions? In this study, researchers investigated how important climate concerns are to Australian consumers compared to other concerns around meat consumption. While climate concerns were important to participants, they were much less important than other factors such as health, quality, and price. The results indicate that education about the climate impact of animal products alone may not be sufficient to change purchasing behavior.

Check it out!

FROM THE MOVEMENT

We often think of the lives taken for the consumption of animal products, but what about the number of days animals spend suffering? Top Charity Faunalytics has created various infographics to illustrate the amount of suffering that goes into producing animal products like scrambled eggs, pork ribs, and fish filets, ranking each product by its impact on animals in the U.S. Learn more on their website.

Top Charity Wild Animal Initiative (WAI) has a fellowship program for early-career scientists interested in wild animal welfare. They especially encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in the sciences. Apply by January 1!

Standout Charity Fish Welfare Initiative is hiring an International Generalist. Are you excited by the opportunity of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented startup taking on a novel field? Are you deeply committed to making an impact in the world by reducing farmed animal suffering? Apply to work with them today.
