Of Time and Timelessness
As humans, we are a mysterious mix. In one aspect of our beings, we are finite, having been created in time and space. Yet, there's a part of each of us—our spirits—that are somehow eternal, made to last forever. We are created finite yet infinite, time-bound yet timeless.
Is it possible, I wonder, that when we experience the flux of time, when we feel it passes slowly or speeds by, we are experiencing life from that part of ourselves which is eternal? I think of people in the rush of love or those who feel seconds as minutes in life threatening situations. Perhaps when we create or make even, we connect with eternity. For there are times we can get into a flow working at our passions and in a way, we step outside of time, only to look up and realize hours have passed.
The change of time at New Year’s can be a reminder of this human connection to time and timelessness, especially as New Year’s comes close on the heels of Christmas and Advent. As we celebrate the incarnation, there is intertwined with it the reality that God became obedient to time. I say obedient to time because God is outside of time as the Eternal One, the source of all creation. God chose to become something that he created and entered a time-bound system.

God is and was outside of time… until Jesus. Now, Jesus as God Incarnate is bound to time because he is bound to be one of us, we who are created beings existing in time and space.

So, as the year changes, let us enter into it with the One who is bound to time with us. Let us move into it with the One who also invites us into the best of our eternality.
First Fruits: Postponed One Week

Normally, First Fruits takes place the first Monday of the month, but with New Year’s celebrations this week, we are shifting it to January 9, still at 7pm in the CoCreate Arts Center at Saddleback Lake Forest.
