What's New

H5P + Laulima Site Licenses Now Available!

Extra, extra, read all about it! The H5P + Laulima program, which was piloted during the 2021-2022 school year is now undergoing its second cohort. This program is built upon an innovative, scalable, and collaborative approach to providing UH faculty and staff opportunities to access and explore relevant educational technologies while engaging and sharing within an active learning community that has resulted in just-in-time support and new discoveries for all. Evaluation of the program to date indicates both students and faculty integrating H5P have increased engagement and/or learning. Program participants have specific cohort requirements that must be met in order to retain their licenses.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback received since the launch of the program, a paid annual site license option (via departmental funds) is now available for faculty and staff who would like to obtain the licenses without participating in the H5P + Laulima program. This allows flexibility for UH faculty and staff who may not be able to commit to the program requirements, but would like to access the tool at a lowered enterprise licensed cost.

Visit the UH H5P Site License page to learn more.

H5P + Laulima Program - Cohort updates

Year two of the H5P + Laulima program is underway with both new and returning (alumni) participants, with lots of H5P exploration and creation taking place during the fall. For those who began utilizing H5P in their online courses, the student evaluation results continue to remain positive!

Research Corner/Trends

Late 2022 had all sorts of surprises and uncertainties (e.g. the fall of FTX, Meta layoffs, etc.). As we all continue to forge ahead in this VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, instructors can help students prepare/cope by incorporating nine instructional strategies that focus on embracing and facing VUCA head-on using various reflection and empathy strategies.

Another VUCA morsel added to educators’ plates is how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is affecting academic integrity. Move over Google Search, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been the hot topic amongst educators these days. Bursting on the scene in late 2022, this chatbot essentially can be prompted to do anything text-based– from writing student essays to coding for developers. Understanding how AI can be used by students, the steps being taken to detect AI plagiarism, and what you can do as an educator can help with navigating this new AI-integrated future.

In addition, other emerging and continually evolving trends and strategies have risen to the top of 2023. Educause’s glossary of the 2023 Strategic Trends shows that institutions are continuing to adapt and plan for new educational, technological, cultural, and workforce shifts. Some of the 2023 strategic trends focus on skills-based learning, the normalization of hybrid/online learning and remote work, cyber and data security, exploring digital transformations in higher ed, and widespread efforts to understand and tackle the ubiquitous issues on diversity, equity, and discrimination.

Want to see how Hawaiʻi’s educators are engaging their students with tech trends and innovations in their own courses? A Tech Trends & Innovation Webinar will be offered sometime in late March. Keep an eye out for an upcoming UHOIC event newsletter for more detailed information. Hope to see you there!

Instructional Video Tips

A laptop sitting on a desk with lights onCreating high-quality instructional videos has become more accessible with the everyday laptop or smartphone. Yet, having the right technology is only one part of creating a quality video.
The video production process is also an important part of creating engaging and effective videos (Borup, 2021). Being cognizant of video production elements like lighting, audio quality, and/or framing can be the difference in creating personable videos that increases a student’s motivation and perception of the course material (Castillo et al., 2021; Rehak, 2022).

Here are some quick tips that you can use when creating instructional videos: The primary light source should face the speaker so that they are well-lit; Record videos in a quiet room for better (not necessarily perfect) audio quality; Frame the main subject (i.e. speakers or visual content) in the center of videos or in an organized composition to better direct the viewer’s attention.
