Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) update
23 December 2022
Detection of JEV in a Riverland resident

You are receiving this email as you have been identified as a stakeholder associated with livestock, especially pigs and or horses, who needs to be alert to Japanese encephalitis.

A case of JEV has been identified by SA Health in a Riverland resident, the first identified case of JEV in South Australia this mosquito season. There have been no confirmed cases in animals in South Australia so far for the summer 2022-23 period.

This is a timely reminder that transmission of JEV remains a risk in South Australia.

Detections in animals
Keep up to date with detections in animals
If you suspect JEV in animals, report it to PIRSA
JEV is a nationally notifiable disease. If you suspect JEV infection in any animal, you must report it to your private vet or to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Vets can discuss subsidised testing with PIRSA.
Be alert to signs of disease in your animals

Controlling mosquitoes on your property

Reducing mosquito numbers and exposure to mosquitoes is key to reducing the risk of the virus. Landholders should control mosquitoes on their property, eliminate breeding areas and use chemicals responsibly.

Information for managing mosquitoes in piggeries
Detailed information to assist pig producers in controlling mosquitoes in piggeries, including information on chemical control, is available on the Farm Biosecurity website.
All piggeries should have a mosquito management plan. A template is available on the Australian Pork Limited website: Japanese encephalitis virus (JE) resources | Australian Pork

Information on mosquito management for horses
Detailed information to assist horse owners in controlling mosquitoes and reducing the risk of mosquito bites to horses is available on the Farm Biosecurity website.

Reduce your chance of being bitten
You can protect yourself from mosquito bites by:
  • using mosquito repellent containing picaridin, DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin.
  • actively avoiding mosquitoes—use insect screens, mosquito nets, coils and vaporisers; and wear long, loose fitting clothing.
  • avoiding being outdoors during peak mosquito biting times of the day.
