Possible flooding expected in Newmarket, take extra caution and stay away from all watercourses
NEWMARKET, ON, December 30, 2022 – Due to the significant amount of rainfall and mild temperatures expected this weekend, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority is anticipating possible flooding in low-lying areas and where watercourses exist. The Town strongly advises everyone to take extra caution and stay away from local bodies of water such as Fairy Lake, Holland River and stormwater ponds. Newmarket staff will be monitoring the water levels and cleaning areas around sewer grates and catch basins as required.
Staying away from watercourses
While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding could occur due to the expected rainfall (25-30mm) and melting of the ice and snow. Watercourses will be flowing at higher-than-normal levels, causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges.
Newmarket encourages parents to advise children to take extreme caution around local bodies of water as the banks of watercourses and storm ponds can be icy, creating slippery conditions while water flow and water levels can fluctuate quickly without warning. Please remain a safe distance away and remember to keep pets on a leash at all times to ensure their safety.
