Happy New Year!

On behalf of all of us at the library, I want to thank you for your kindness, your generosity and your support throughout the year.  While it is feeling cliche to refer to "these unprecedented times," all that we have shared in recent years has only strengthened our community.
As we get ready to close out 2022 and welcome in a new year at the library, we wish you all good health and happiness in the months ahead.

Be well.  Be safe.  Be kind.
Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@jaffreypubliclibrary.org.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie
2022 A Year in Review
We had such a great year, thanks to all of you!

Farewell to Ms. Andrea!

Friday, January 6 at 2-5 pm
Drop by the library next Friday afternoon to help us send Ms. Andrea off on her next adventure, with all of our best wishes for her success.
Undoubtedly, the staff will be in costume... and silly as ever. But in all seriousness, we will miss her dearly and know that an afternoon of sharing memories and joyful anecdotes with you will help us all to say Bon Voyage to a truly special friend and colleague.
Photos of the same child with Ms. Andrea - as a newborn at our Summer Learning kickoff in 2017 and today at 5 years old in 2022. Thank you for sharing!
Save the Date!

Winter Learning is coming!

More details of our Winter Learning program - Read to the Rhythm - will be coming in a January newsletter.
The program will run from January 30 - March 18, so mark your calendars.
Highlights will include our legendary BINGO challenges, a visit from Pete the Cat on February 4, an interactive Theremin music program for all ages during winter vacation (yes, we all had to look that up!), the return of the Silly Stuffie Sleepover, and much more.
Library Budget Review

Department Budget Committee Review

All the Town departments have their budget review meetings with the Budget Committee on Saturday, January 7 at the Fire Station. The Library's time is 10:35 - 10:50 am.  As you recall, we did not get our requested budget last year, so your support by attending is always welcome!
Upcoming Programs for All Ages

Mahjong Meetup

Returns on January 10, Weekly on Tuesdays at 1 pm in the Bean Room
Ms. Eileen leads our Mahjong group in a non-competitive, friendly atmosphere where you can learn to play Mahjong or practice/perfect your game.  Mahjong enthusiasts of all levels welcome.

Humanities Book Discussions

Our online book discussion group for adults features a different Humanities discipline - history, literature, philosophy, ethics, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, geography, the law or legal theory, classics, and cultural or religious studies -  each month.  We will join a humanities expert for a shared book discussion on Zoom, in the comfort of your own living room.
  • Tuesday, January 10 at 6:30 pm on Zoom - This month's selection is How to Be Good by Nick Hornby, facilitated by Dr. Ann McClellan.  This month is full, but if you have been waitilisted, please reach out to Julie.
  • Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30 pm on Zoom - February's selection is Becoming Beauvoir by Kate Kirkpatrick, a fascinating philosophical biography of one of the most important existentialists and feminists of the 20th century, facilitated by Dr. Kiki Berk, Associate professor of Philosophy at Southern New Hampshire University.  Registration is now open and books will be available in early January.
Please visit our Event Calendar for more information. This program is made possible by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.

Youth Book Clubs & Storytimes

Rhythm & Rhyme Storytime - Weekly, on Wednesdays at 10:30 am, starting January 18
Our storytime is back with a musical twist!  Join Ms. Bailey and Ms. Eileen for stories, rhythm and rhyme!  Musical instruments, puppets and song will get those tiny feet tapping to the beat while we explore some of our favorite storybooks and fingerplays.  All ages welcome. Caregiver participation is required.

My First Book Club - Ages 4 - 6 -  Friday, January 13 at 4 pm
Join Ms. Eileen for our monthly book club for ages 4-6. Sign up and come to the library to check out your copy of this month’s title, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me, by Eric Carle. Read it at home and then join us for a child-sized discussion and activity in the library.
Caregiver participation may be required for the activity segment of the book club meeting.
Registration required.

Whodunit Book Club - Ages 7 - 10 - Friday, February 3 at 4 pm; Books available in early January!
Help crack the case in this Whodunit Book Club for mystery lovers. Youth ages 7-10 check out a copy of the month's book selection, then meet in the library for a discussion and hands-on activity that puts participants' new sleuthing skills to the test. This month is a library mystery story, a Timmi Tobbson, Solve Them Yourself Picture Mystery, A Family Secret, by B. Vitale & J. I. Wagner.  A guest officer from the Jaffrey Police Department may join each month to lend an inside perspective on getting to the bottom of crime.
Registration required.

Grub Club - What's on the menu?

What is Grub Club?  After-school snacks plus games, crafts and other activities.
After-school, every day when school is in session,  2:30 pm - 4:00 pm in the Collaborative Learning Space on the Ground Floor

(Location subject to change for other library programs.)

The Jaffrey Food Pantry generously provides after-school snacks to local youth who spend their afternoons at the library.  As the weather has turned colder, we have combined snack time with creative, open-ended, self-directed activities.
This keeps our youth engaged and keeps the food confined to one indoor location for easy clean-up, while relieving some of the space strain on other floors of the library.
Each week's menu will include an art activity and board games.  Future menu items include pastels, acrylic rock painting, pine cone animal creations, book art, beading, and more!
All children and teens are welcome.

AARP Tax Help

Returns, by appointment, on February 2 in the Bean Room.
Free income tax assistance from AARP will return, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, every Thursday, February 2 through April 13 at 1:00 - 4:00 pm.  For more information, call the library to request your AARP Tax packet.  Schedule appointments by calling NH 211 or going online to NHTAXHELP.ORG.  You do not need to be a member of AARP to enjoy this free service.
