Northeast Big Data Hub Newsletter | January 2023
In 2022, the Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub expanded! We are now a community of 7,210 data science students, teachers, professionals, and enthusiasts from 59 countries, all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. 

The NEBDHub builds and strengthens partnerships across industry, academia, nonprofits, and government to address societal and scientific challenges, spur economic development, and accelerate innovation in the big data ecosystem.

The COVID Information Commons (CIC) invites all NSF and NIH PIs who have received COVID-19 related funding to update the public information about their award via a voluntary survey. All updates will be reflected in the CIC PI Database.

The NEBDHub has relaunched the Data Science Resource Repository (DSRR)The DSRR is a curated set of 630+ English and 75+ Spanish resources for data science learners, educators, researchers, and career explorers of all backgrounds and education levels. Explore the DSRR via the NEBDHub website.

With the help of our fantastic student researchers, the COVID Information Commons (CIC) has updated our online listing of free, open datasets. Find COVID-19 datasets on the CIC website or email the CIC Project Team at info@covidinfocommons.net to recommend other additions.
NSDC Video Library Additions!
 
This month, we've added videos to the NSDC Video Library as developed by students leveraging the IBM OpenDS4All GitHub content. New videos include sections on data science ethics (recorded by Varalika Mahajan & Dashansh Prajapati), data cleaning (recorded by Stephanie Guo), and AI explainability & AI fairness (recorded by Rahulraj Singh).

Data Sharing and Cyberinfrastructure Working Group


Date: February 3rd
The Data Sharing and Cyberinfrastructure Working Group is a collaboration across all four of the Big Data Innovation Hubs. The working group brings together data scientists and cyberinfrastructure professionals to learn about topics of common interest.  Areas covered include data management and analytics tools and frameworks, and use of data science to solve real world problems in areas such as transportation, water quality, public health and disaster response.

WiDS Datathon 2023 Climate Change Webinar

Date: February 3rd
The WiDS Datathon Climate Change Webinar features experts from a wide range of domains and institutions in order to explore the multi-faceted challenges posed by climate change. Not only do we aim to glimpse at how climate change impacts sectors spanning healthcare, energy and environmental protection, we will hear from our panel how data science can help us understand and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The National Big Data Health Science Conference is a signature annual event of the Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC). This 4th annual conference will include innovative plenary sessions, panels, and workshops that emphasize the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in Big Data applications and advancements in the health sciences.

Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and
Engineering (CASE) Workshop

Dates: March 26th - 29th
The CASE workshop is an exciting opportunity to learn from science policy and advocacy experts about the role of science in policymaking and the federal policy-making process. The workshop, held in Washington, D.C., teaches students about Congress, the federal budget, and science communication during the three-day course.
Students interested in attending must apply for sponsorship through a sponsoring institution, which will cover all costs to attend the workshop. A list of 2023 CASE sponsoring institutions will be posted in January 2023.

Date: March 31st
AI and ML are touted as the next step improving health, constructing digital systems to innovate new technologies, pioneering creative and artistic expression, and driving data economies. These movements necessitate the equitable inclusion of Indigenous communities to avoid further data erasures and inequities resulting from algorithmic bias. The New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA) is an alliance of 18 higher education institutions, as well as industry and government members, that catalyzes collaboration in advanced computing and data analytics research, education and technology.

Paper abstracts for the 10th Annual NJBDA Symposium will be accepted through March 25th on topics including, but not limited to: AI & Finance, Blockchain, Crypto & Digital Currencies, NFTs, and Big Data Business Intelligence.

Big Data Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP)

BD-STEP is a two-year fellowship opportunity managed jointly by the National Cancer Institute and the Veterans Health Administration that uses data science to improve outcomes for cancer patients. The combination of data access, academic mentorship, and clinical guidance equips BD-STEP graduates with the diverse skillsets they need to pursue careers in healthcare data science.
