Encouraging environmentally sustainable death-care options and the preservation of natural areas through green burial.
Grow the Green Burial Movement
with a Year-End Gift
Natural burial and death care providers and advocates, as well as Green Burial Council donors, sponsors, and participants in educational conferences and other programs, are growing the green burial movement. In the last two years there has been a:
  • 30% increase in green burial cemeteries (hybrid, natural and conservation) in the United States and Canada, to 367; and a
  • 24% increase in GBC-certified cemeteries, funeral homes, and product providers, to 335.
As a nonprofit organization, financial support from the public is critical to the GBC’s education and awareness programs and activities, and to pay for the resources necessary to manage organizational operations and achieve our mission. These resources, and the continued work of the GBC’s dedicated volunteers, are making a difference, including a:
  • 56% increase in Instagram followers to more than 5,300;
  • 13% increase to nearly 8,000 Facebook fans; and
  • More than 10,000 visits a month to the GBC website!
Green Burial Council International is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organization.
Donations are deductible and our U.S. tax ID number is 45-4422635.

Green Burial in the News
"As more and more humans have become concerned with living sustainably, a growing population has also become concerned with dying sustainably. Fortunately, there are a number of companies across the U.S. that offer eco-friendly burial methods, from human composting to water cremation. That said, these practices are not available in every state. So, a new report analyzes the greenest states to die in — you know, in case you feel like moving across the country to spend your final days."

A new report by Choice Mutual Insurance Agency examines the resources available for folks across the US regarding natural burial and adjacent practices, keeping a close eye on which states and locations boast more options. You can read more about 'which state is the 'greenest' die in' here

"Until the 1860s, burials in the U.S. and elsewhere were simple: Cemetery workers dug a hole in the ground. Funeral workers wrapped the body in a cloth shroud or placed it inside a simple wooden casket, placed the body in the hole and covered it over with dirt. (This is still how many communities, including most Muslims and Jews, conduct their burials.)"

In this piece, the kaleidoscopic concerns tethered to green burial are explored- from its ancient history, its environmental benefits, and the cost for consumers. Elizabeth Fournier, peer educator and conference presenter for the Green Burial Council and Dr. Caitlyn Hauke, past-president of the Green Burial Council International's Board of Directors, share their rich insights and predictions.
