Taking a Dive Into Deep Culture: The Transformative Power of Indigenous Pedagogy – Register now

For nearly a century Native American students have experienced the poorest educational outcomes in Washington state and nationally. These outcomes are deeply rooted in the hundreds of years of ongoing colonization; which includes the 150 years of public Indian education since the boarding school era. The emergence of neurobiology has shed light on what Indigenous people have always known; that culture is a protective factor and builds resilience in Indigenous children. This presentation describes what deep culture is (beyond clothes, food, songs, etc.) and what happens in the brain and body when taught through a deep cultural context. Native American cultural values, practices and behaviors can enhance brain and epigenetic function which can supercharge learning experiences for all.

This fully virtual training will be offered via zoom. Participants will have access to a live 1 hour and 30 minute presentation followed by 30 minutes of discussion and question and answer. This presentation will be recorded and participants will be provided access to the recording for 30 days following the presentation.

Participants will be able to earn STARS credit or Clock Hours - you must remain on the entire live training in order to receive credit.

Cost for the training is $15 or FREE for all WAEYC members.
This training will be presented in English with Spanish Interpretation available.

Learning and Video Games

Focus & Self-Control

'“My son LOVES his video games. I’m not opposed to him playing them since knowing how to use electronics is important in today’s world. I want to make sure that when he does play with video games, he’s also developing his mind. Any suggestions?”

Skill-Building Opportunities

Turn challenging moments into skill-building opportunities.

Picky Eating, Bedtime Fears, Meltdowns, Constant Crying, Sibling Rivalry: what's a parent to do?

Mind in the Making is here to help you discover the skills that every child needs. We've researched the questions parents most frequently ask each other, their families and the professionals in their lives. And we’ve taken those questions and created 1-page guides for parents and professionals to help them turn common behavioral issues into opportunities to promote life skills in children.

Many resources are available here to answer many of parents' questions:

News and Research

Know a child who might need extra help? PAVE has resources…

If someone who knows the student asks for an evaluation, the school is responsible to:

  • Document the request

  • Record the date the referral was made

  • Provide a referral form in the person’s native language

  • Respond to the request within 25 school days

Sample Letter to Request Evaluation A Brief Overview

  • Washington State requires special education referrals to be in writing (WAC 392-172A-03005). Anyone with knowledge of a student can write a referral.

  • The state provides a form for making a special education referral, downloadable from a website page titled, Making a Referral for Special Education. The form is not required—any written request is valid.

  • Schools are responsible to provide families with a referral form in their native language and to provide qualified interpreters so families can participate in all meetings to discuss their student’s special education eligibility and services.

  • Another option is to write a referral using the sample letter at the end of this article.

  • Evaluation process and family/student rights are described in the special education Procedural Safeguards, updated in 2022.
