"Incredible views and extra miles!"

There’s so much beauty, hospitality, and joy to experience along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage! I’ve got my favorite spots, from deep in Ohiopyle State Park to soaring high along the Salisbury Viaduct. Maybe you like exploring trail towns like Cumberland or Confluence. You and I both have memories that will last a lifetime!

Years ago, when the Great Allegheny Passage was first completed, I made a two-day thru-trip with my son Peter and later, tackled a seven-day trip with my wife Barbara. For me, GAP trips were achievements! And for years, I’ve ridden a section of the GAP every day, either on my commute to work here in Pittsburgh, or by joyriding out to McKeesport or West Newton on Saturdays.

But recently, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the medications I’m on sap my strength. When I previously would have ridden 50 miles, I can only do 15. I don’t like the change, but still, every bike ride I am able to take brings me joy. When I’m riding on the GAP, I believe I am winning against my disease. This takes the idea of “achievement” to a new level!

You have stories of achievement and joy along the GAP, too! You’ve savored incredible views, pedaled extra miles, and very likely braved the rain. Maybe you’ve faced your own troublesome diagnosis and have kept going.

Today, will you join me in making a generous year-end gift to support the GAP? It takes many volunteers and truckloads of materials to clear ditches, repair bridge decking, and resurface worn sections. You and I depend on wayfinding signage, updated maps, and enhanced amenities for future trips.
