Good morning and Happy New Year! It's Monday, January 2, and although Richmond Public Schools are open today, there will be no mail deliveryno residential trash collection, and most banks are closed today. In preparation for next week's recycling event, here's an update on services provided by the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority
  • The City of Richmond partners with CVWMA for curbside and drop-off recycling, electronics and yard waste recycling, and household hazardous waste collections.
  • For curbside recycling in the Museum District:
    • Homes are provided with a blue-lidded a 95-gallon recycling cart
    • Use the CVWMA web tool:  
      • to request a new recycling cart,
      • to sign up for recycling day email reminders, or
      • to look up your exact recycling days. 
  • Take Christmas trees, electronics, and household hazardous waste to Bring One for the Chipper 2022 on Saturday, January 14, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. (below). Otherwise, formerly live, formerly decorated trees will be picked up with your regular trash on your regular recycling day

While the MDA continues its search for a new supplier, our West of the Boulevard Historic District house plaques remain unavailable. Watch this space for updates!

All Richmond Public Library are closed today, January 2, and will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3. Regular hours at the Belmont Branch are Monday and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Online services are available 24/7.

Regular hours at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and VMFA Shop are 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. daily and until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Best Café and Amuse Restaurant hours. General admission is always free.

The Virginia Museum of History and Culture's galleries, Museum Store, and Museum Café (above) are open daily from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. The E. Claiborne Robins, Jr. Research Library is open Monday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

  • Last week: In preparation for the VMHC's January 6–16 Used Book Sale, bring your gently used hardcover and softcover fiction and nonfiction books to the Registration Desk daily from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. There are some do's and dont's.
  • Friday, January 6, 5:00–8:00 p.m. First Fridays at VMHC, a family-friendly event. The museum will offer free admission to the galleries, beer and wine specials in the Café, access to food trucks, live music, face painting, a scavenger hunt, and other family-centered activities. Free, no registration required. 
  • Saturday, January 7, 10:30 a.m. Up in Smoke: The History of Tobacco in Virginia. From pre-European settlement to the modern day, tobacco has played a central role in the development of Virginia's economy and culture. Join the VMHC as they highlight hundreds of years of tobacco-related collection items from the people and businesses involved with Virginia's famous cash crop. $0–$20
  • Saturday, January 7, 10:30 a.m. Stories at the Museum. A read-aloud storytime in a museum gallery paired with a related craft activity. This week: Learning about New Year Traditions. $0–$8 per participant
