Welcome, new folks!

Hi, there. I've had a number of people join the mailing list recently. I want to make sure everybody gets their free Frosthelm book, Traitors Unseen. If you haven't gotten it, you can get it free here (the site will ask you to sign up for this newsletter, which you're already getting) or here from Smashwords. It's also on Apple BooksKobo, and Barnes & Noble. Please, enjoy with my compliments.

Got Trouble is only a few days away

My latest book, Got Trouble, is back from my editor, Tami, and I've made all her recommended edits. I've got the cover set, with a cover designed by Olivia Pro Design, some new art created for me by Artholistic on Fiverr, and then final tweaks to the design by my son, Nick Dobson, when we were together over the holiday break.

The only remaining step is to do one last read-through for clarity, consistency, and any last-minute touch-ups. I'm going to do that today and tomorrow, and then I'll submit the book to Amazon. They usually take between 5-24 hours to clear a book for sale, and then it will be out there in the world, ready for you!

I'll post a link to the published book in my next newsletter on the 15th, but if you want to get your hands on it before that, have a look for Got Trouble on Amazon or on my website in four or five days.

Here's the cover blurb to whet your appetite:

Trouble can find you anywhere
When your day starts at 11 pm, it’s a long way to sunrise. Glynnis Cary is stuck working as a night manager at the Gas-O-Mart. Her husband Keith’s idea of romance is buying her grocery store flowers, usually only when he comes home drunk. Her son is in trouble at school, skipping out with his girlfriend, and keeping secrets. Big secrets, ones that may turn out to be both lucrative and felonious. Keith’s bumbling unexpectedly makes Glynnis the target of multiple murderous enemies and a lot of bullets. Way more bullets than is reasonable. On the run with a new friend, one whose life she’s just inadvertently destroyed, Glynnis has to rely on her gut, her grit, and her ability to spin big lies to find a way to survive.

Got Trouble is a new novel of suspense, thrills, humor, and one woman's attempt to just have something go right. For once. For crying out loud.

My plans for 2023

It being the new year, I figured I'd give you a run-down of my upcoming projects. Here's what I have in the pipeline:

Kenai
My next sci fi book, Kenai, is a few steps back in the process, but it will be my next major effort. It is completed, and I've done one rewrite on it. Following that, I've gotten feedback from two of my usual early readers and from my wife. I'll incorporate their feedback when I do another in-depth rewrite/edit, and then, if everything looks good, I'll send it off to my copyeditor for final notes. I have an artist lined up for the cover, which will probably look something like the quick AI-art mockup I made while playing around with designs (shown below) . When I get her art, I'll send it to my cover designer for lettering, layout, and all that she does to turn a painting into a cover. That may all take me a while, but I hope to have Kenai ready to publish by February or March.

The current work-in-progress
I also have another thriller, my NaNoWriMo project from last November. I'm about 90% of the way through the first draft. Once that's done, I'll need to do a first reread/rewrite/edit, and then it will be ready for my early readers. This book is a suspense story set in the modern world. It's not related to Got Trouble in terms of narrative, but it is also set in North Carolina, where I've lived for the past 25+ years, and it has a similar feel.

The one after that
I really want to do another fantasy book, so that will be my next new project. I'm hoping to get that started by the end of January, once I get some of these other ones moved along the process some. I'm thinking of trying out a new setting, although I'm terribly vague on the details. I'll do a little thinking and planning on that before writing, but as with all of my books, it will probably mostly be developed and plotted organically as I write, because outlines and I aren't very compatible.

Some stories to try

I'm part of several author collectives, and we share each other's work to try to help all of us reach more readers. In many cases, the books we share are are free or discounted. Sometimes, they ask that you sign up for a newsletter like this one.

First, I have Road to Antaris by Sabrina Rosen. This is a prequel to her Antaris series, and it is 100% free for you to try. The world of Antaris is magical, with active gods, and it is has very strict gender roles. Sounds like an engaging fantasy world with lots of ground for mystery and mischief.

Second, I have PAWS by Debbie Manber Kupfer. This is a YA shapeshifter story about a league of young folks who can turn into various animals. The book is well-reviewed with over 120 reviews on Amazon, and it's on sale for $0.99 right now if you'd like to check it out.

Finally, I have The Lost Talisman by K.A. Gandy, the second story (first full-length novel) in her An'Loran Chronicles. A young woman is slated to go through her Awakening ceremony to gain access to her full-fledged talisman magic, but she's not sure she has any, and she's already run into enough trouble as a kid. This sounds like one of those neat coming-of-age stories combined with a cool magic system. I encourage you to check it out.

Thanks

Thanks so much for reading this newsletter. I am so excited to share my thriller, Got Trouble, with you in a few days. I really hope you'll give it a read, and I hope you enjoy Glynnis as much as I enjoyed writing her.

May the Bloodmother watch over you -
Dave
