January 2023 Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear JLT Friends and Supporters:

Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful and restorative holiday season.

The start of the year provides an opportunity to reflect on the past and set intentions for the year ahead. Looking back, the Junior League of Tallahassee had an incredible first half of the League year. Our 26th annual Kids Boutique served 247 Leon County elementary school students,  providing each kid brand new outfits, a pair of shoes, and school supplies. We launched our new partnership with Sabal Palm Elementary: A Community Partnership School and renewed our partnership with HOPE Community, providing volunteer and financial support to both organizations. We are also thankful for the continued support of our sponsors and partners who supported our Little Black Dress Initiative, raising nearly $40,000 for our signature projects! We also completed the full redesign of our JLT branding, to further align our local League to the Association of Junior Leagues International.

Looking ahead to 2023, I am excited about the events and programs JLT has scheduled for this spring! The 7th annual JLT Golf Classic is set to tee off on March 24, 2023. We have officially opened registration! Sponsorship opportunities are also still available and appreciated to help us continue to raise funds to sponsor our community initiatives. Shifting to our community impact, JLT members are ramping up for the 4th annual Mighty Meals event, which provides families with fresh food for the entirety of spring break and fights against childhood hunger in our community. JLT members continue to stay busy supporting partner organizations through our Done In A Day opportunities, attending JLT training offerings, and looking forward to participating in advocacy programming led by the Junior League Florida Statewide Public Affairs committee.

As you can see, 2023 is shaping up to be a great year! If you would like more information about partnering with or supporting JLT, please contact me at president@jltallahassee.org. We cannot do our work or make an impact without the support of community partners like you.

Celebrate the Dress

Join the Junior League of Tallahassee at Over Under Bar on Friday, January 13, 4-7 pm, for an evening of guest bartending to celebrate the 2022 Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI). Guest bartenders Becca Piers, Sam Daniels, and Corie Stegall will jump behind the bar to celebrate with YOU. All tips will be added to the LBDI total funds raised and support the mission of the Junior League of Tallahassee.

Christmas Magic in the Air

JLT volunteers brought holiday cheer to the children at HOPE Community this December, decking the campus with festive decor, hosting a crafts and hot chocolate party, and wrapping the donated presents. On Christmas Eve, volunteers distributed gifts, played games, and served dinner to the families at the shelter. New Member Kimora McConnell who volunteered Christmas Eve at the shelter wrote about the experience: “This is so close to my heart due to lived experiences of seeing how quickly a safe home can be taken away through no fault of your own and you are left to find another solution quickly.”

Big Bend Homeless Coalition operates the only homeless shelter serving families in the greater Big Bend region. On a daily basis, there are about 175 persons served and a waitlist of 50 more families. BBHC also operates affordable housing and is the single largest entity, outside of the VA, to provide services to veterans in need in the Big Bend.

There’s no game like golf.

Join us for our annual JLT Golf Classic on March 24, 2023! There's a guaranteed day of golf, food, and fun to raise funds to support the Junior League of Tallahassee’s mission to support the local community! The tournament will be held on March 24th at Southwood Golf Club.

Girl Power

JLT members spent a beautiful morning volunteering with Girls on the Run Panhandle’s Annual 5k. Founded in 1996, Girls on the Run Panhandle is dedicated to making an impact on girls’ lives in our community. Girls on the Run empowers girls to build healthy physical and mental habits that last long beyond the program. The program also teaches important life skills such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, and making intentional decisions. JLT is proud to support women and girls in our community!

This partnership operates through JLT’s Done in a Day (DIAD) program. If you have a short-term volunteer need that ties in with the JLT’s mission, you can learn more and fill out an application on our website.

Farm to Table

How do farmers party? They turnip the beets!

JLT volunteers turned out early at Lott's Community Garden in Monticello to harvest turnips and mustard greens for our friends at Second Harvest of the Big Bend. As a supplement to the produce program, Second Harvest of the Big Bend grows a rotation of produce to add local and nutritious items that may not be readily available from donor networks. JLT is proud to partner with Second Harvest and provide fresh, local, and nutritious food to our neighbors in the Big Bend.

It’s Cookie Time!

All we need is some Christmas cookies and holiday cheer loud enough for all to hear. JLT volunteers mixed up some holiday cheer creating royal icing bags and cookie kits for Heart Gallery Big Bend’s annual Cookies with Santa fundraiser. Heart Gallery Big Bend is a volunteer-run organization that raises awareness for children in our community needing adoptive homes. The organization works with children in the foster care system to find them their forever home.

Teachers Make the World Go-Round

JLT made an impact at our newest community partner, Sabal Palm Elementary School, recently in December. Chair, Heather Pepe, and committee member, Danielle Morsching, created a gourmet hot chocolate bar to warm the teachers and staff during the cold snap. The committee also organized a festive holiday party for the teachers and staff with lots of raffle prizes to go around. We are so thankful for the many teachers in our community who give their time, effort, and talents to our students.

Sustainer Impact

One of the most important benefits of membership in the Junior League is lifelong connections to community-minded women. JLT is deeply grateful to our Sustaining Members who have given their time, financial support, and leadership skills to improve both our League and our community. This December, our sustainers gathered for a holiday party and collected 90 pounds of food for Second Harvest of the Big Bend. Many thanks to Tracy Morales for hosting and Jennifer Stanford and Allyson Foster for organizing.
