MIT CRE students shine in national contest
The six-member team took first place in the annual National Real Estate Challenge hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business Real Estate Center. It was the first time MIT participated in the invitation-only event. The team consisted of Steven La MSRED ‘23, Christopher (who prefers a mononym) MSRED ‘23, Will Gietema MSRED ‘22, Clemens Reimer MSRED ‘23, Frank Weiss MSRED ’22, and Ryan Wu MSRED ’22.

New York Times includes Kristel Smentek's exhibition catalog among 2022's best art books
The History, Theory, and Criticism professor’s exhibition catalog, co-edited with Edouard Kopp and Elizabeth Rudy, is listed among the best art books of 2022. Smentek is co-curator of “Dare to Know: Prints and Drawings in the Age of Enlightenment” on view at the Harvard Art Museums through January 15.

The Royal Academy of Music's "200 Pieces"
A music composition by MIT Media Lab’s Tod Machover, “Resolve Remote,” has been released online as part of the Royal Academy of Music’s “200 Pieces” project to celebrate their 200th anniversary. The piece is for violin and electronics and was commissioned by the Royal Academy. Listen to the recording.

Honors for Urban Play
Congratulations to urban planning researchers Fábio Duarte and Ricardo Álvarez whose book Urban Play: Make Believe, Technology, and Space won the Outstanding Academic Title for 2022. Duarte and Álvarez argue that the merely functional aspects of technology may undermine its transformative power. The book was published by MIT Press. |

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES PERIOD
MIT's Independent Activities Period (IAP) provides members of the MIT community (students, faculty, staff, and alums) with a unique opportunity to organize, sponsor and participate in a wide variety of activities, including how-to sessions, forums, athletic endeavors, lecture series, films, tours, recitals and contests. IAP 2023 begins Monday, January 9 and ends Friday, February 3. Here are a few IAP courses offered through SA+P:

Whether you're machining steel, mixing chemicals, or working on a new baking recipe, keep your clothes clean and create in style. Students will be able to make an apron sized exactly to them.
